what is procedure for a dog attack? and have anyone else had problems?

dog is persistent, when i'm near dog goes mental. Silly owner, says 'oh its just the postie sweety' whilst dog is wanting to rip my head off.
Anyway i'm careful, rattle the gate so if dog is in garden i hear it.
one day walked down street, dog in the middle of the street with owner having a natter, dog sees me... and charges... wanting blood.
it grabs my trousers missing my leg and savages my trousers. it grabs my bag, i retaliate by throwing my post at it and kicking it, before i try and put bag between me and dog... kick winds the dog, who goes over roads and stands staring at me....
at this point, owner gets involved.... 'oh, he';s never done that before...' i cant pick my post up, coz the second i do dog is going to grab my head.

my response 'well i just kicked him, and he needs putting down.'

anyway, i had to resort my post, dog is still there, my manager is aware, second time dog has attacked. got another postie last yr.
silly owner still calls it sweety, when its raring up at me in the garden. She lets it out just after i've been. And it throws itself at gate. its quite intimidating.... my dog wouldnt do that!
was very close to letting the police know. but didnt know how this would fare.

Because the dog attacked you in the street then it's a job for the police and dog warden, contact your local council for your warden.

As for what you're doing at the address, I would make sure the manager deals with it, you should not have to be in fear when delivering.

Get the manager to get a letter out to dog owner/s stating that no more deliveries to address/es until the situation is rectified either by keeping dog indoors away from letterbox or putting up a box on the outside of the property. If it were me I would refuse to go there until its done.

Report it to the police. I too used to deliver to a house like this, and in the street the dog use to go berserk! Thankfully, the Managers decided to go to the door themselves, and the dog jumped up so high behind the door, and hit the top glass panel, one manager jumped back in fright, and fell over the wee wall behind, needless to say, I didn't deliver any more mail.
Pleas report it to the police--this dog could also attack other innocent folks!

I got the manager to deliver it

When i was on delivery (indoor now), i had regular trouble with an Alsation which was literally foaming at the mouth anytime it saw me,
to make it worse, it's owner was/is a complete bell end ! he took great delight walking his dog past me without it's leash on knowing full well it could go for me or at least act aggressively toward me,
i didn't waste anytime making my concerns known to the gaffer who logged it in the book as a potential hazard,
a while later, when i was delivering to this guys house, his front door was open, and dog charged out, and made to grab my arm, but it didn't bite down or cause injury,
i shouted through to the occupants of the house to come out (they must have heard either me or the dog,) no one would come out !
the next day, they got a letter off the gaffer informing them of anymore incidents with the dog, and that would mean a suspension of their mail delivery, and that it could affect delivery to some of the residents of their street.
so that was 2 incidents logged within a matter of a few weeks, and thats the key thing, logging it down, no matter whether u are injured or not, if the dog is a risk, thats all that matters !
after that, i never once had anymore trouble with that dog, although one of the neighbours told me the paperboy was attacked and bit,
what happened with the dog after that, i've no idea.

A dog got loose and charged one of our posties a couple of months ago. The postie kicked it in the face and threw his bag out as a shield. The owner then came out and grabbed the dog.

Next day, the owner was immediately issued a suspension of mail, I think it was only two weeks but it was a speedy response.

That the phrase again, it a sweet dog or it never attacks anyone, it will not bite or hurt you and so on...

It is the postmen that likes dogs or have dogs that allows situations like this to develop into bites and intimidation.

A zero tolerance will go a long way to reducing issues. Owners should all have dog signs if they want their mail delivers or nurses or utilities people to come round. And one letter and quick suspension of service.

We should also get the police involved quickly especially with nutters or unreasonables walking dogs in street without a lead.

Can we actually sue dog owners for negligence or wilful act of letting their dogs attack or postmen?
