Depends on the context to be honest.

If other people who can drive have been given the same choices then he has not been singled out.

If there are no more walking duties left then there is really no other option for the business - as much as we would like we can't expect royal mail to make jobs up for people.

However, it is against the spirit of the agreement in that they shouldn't be saying it before the revision, as per the quoted paragraph from http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... rs#p476545" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; they should be making efforts to accommodate such individuals, so it might be worth getting rep and ADR involved.

A. If there are employees in your unit that are unable to drive you will need to consider what other duty options are available. You may need to accommodate these employees on shared routes as a planned non driver. (There is a limit to the number of non drivers you can accommodate on shared deliveries. It is, therefore, recommended that this is not an option to employees that can drive but choose not to.) You should explore what other opportunities there are to accommodate the individual within your office. If individuals cannot be accommodated in your office, you may be able to accommodate them via a move to another unit within a reasonable distance, where suitable work is available. Where this is not possible an employee may effectively become surplus and in this instance you should take advice from your Regional ER/IR Manager.


Dealing with drivers who invalidate themselves from driving

This is not a new problem for Royal Mail, but the increased numbers of vans in your operation may make the problems associated with this more acute. Guidance on how to deal with this situation will vary, depending on the nature of how the licence has been invalidated.

However, as a principle, all reasonable steps will be made to find alternative duties within the parent unit for people who can no longer perform a driving duty.

I think the main question is where is he on seniority?
Eg are there non drivers below him who wouldnt be moved out of the office?

He has been there longer than me and i do not drive but nothing has been said to me regarding my future position after the revision.

Just out of interest why is he against driving? I'm due to start as a 'postman with driving' and just wondering if there's something I should be concerned about or is it a case of he doesn't want the.hassle?

Doesn't want the hassle but he hadn't indicated to the bosses whether he was opposed to driving or not. I get the feeling that it was a warning to those that had a mind not to fit in with their well laid plans. I'll get more gen tomorrow.

well he is in a strong position
you simply cannot be discriminated for having a driving licence

Surely RM cannot force anyone to drive, when someone says 'they don't want the hassle' I trust they are talking about the Legal implications forced upon them like traffic laws, Van condition, safety of mail etc to name but a few.
I am a driver and I will admit that a walking duty is a lot easier than being a driver.

Also please remember that if you have an accident that you must also inform your own insurance company weather at fault or not, this will increase your own personel costs (so we have been told?)

RM driving, there's a lot to think about.......carefully.
