DRIVING LICENCE

P&L in our office is well under way and now Royal Fail want us to bring our driving licences in to check and every 6 months after that so my question is what happens if we do not comply, will (hope) they revert back to what we used to do and do they by law have to check the driving licence

I do believe they do have a duty to check every 6 months, I don't believe they are allowed to take a photo copy.

If your duties include driving then im sure you will have to show it.

They have a duty to check them on a regular basis to comply with their "O" Licence, no definition on how often regular is, RM chooses every 6 months that is their perogative, they are allowed to take a copy but must treat it the same as any other piece of personal information they have about you in compliance with the data protection act

From my understanding if you sign for a driving duty within a P & L system then you are obliged to offer a copy of your licence whenever it is requested. Failure to do could lead to you being removed from your duty or possibly dismissal as no licence means you are unable to perform the duty in which you are employed for.

Is there any reason that someone would apply for a driving duty without having a driving licence? I can understand that maybe the dog ate it or it got lost but a copy can be obtained easily so there shouldn't be a problem really should there?

I am the walker but they badgered me to take a test in case the driver was ill or on holiday.
Prefer the walking and can I refuse to do driving when they come round again to check our licences?

Reason being that no one likes the P&L and by an office full of posties refusing to drive then what would they do?
Regarding signing for a P&L duty then I and many others was not aware they could finish you for refusing

I'm afraid you wont stop P&L by refusing to drive.
If an office is short of drivers then they will recruit more.

I remember someone posting on here (might have been Dingo, not sure, but anyway) as for the surplus non-drivers, they will try and find work at an alternative RM site, which might not necessarily be on delivery, it might be a mail centre (Oh, deep joy!)

After that, well in theory you could be deemed surplus to requirements. I don't know if this scenario has actually happened anywhere yet but I wouldn't want to be the test case.

With regards to item 2,we were told at a WTL session yesterday that there is no place for anyone in Royal Mail that doesn't have a driving license,one or two people worried that they may lose their jobs.

Would this not go down as discrimination?

Royal Mail has a policy for drivers who invalidate themselves from driving.
Each case is taken on it's own merits but the overriding principle is to find other duties to perform in your parent office.
If this is not possible you may have to work in a neighbouring office.
Despite the scare stories you won't be sacked.
We have 2 members currently serving driving bans,they have simply been taken off driving duties for the duration.
Remember...only one of a park&loop pair can drive anyway.

Thanks fishtank, that was the answer I was looking for, not that it is relevant to me or anyone I know but well worth knowing non the less.
