Can anyone tell me what the criteria is for special unpaid leave. Is there a minimum amount you have to take ? Do you have to add it to other paid leave?

You can buy extra leave to take you up to the maximum 6 weeks. It just means you are paid slightly less each week. Ask your manager about it.
