Hello, I'm thinking of being a rep in my office.
Just got a few questions.

If you have got a divisional meeting to go to, do the union pay our travel expense?
How much facility time should you be allowed each week?
Any other perks?
And what are the crap things about being a rep?

if you are going to a section or central committe meeting then keep any receipts for petrol etc, at central committee you will get to know the branch tresurer

you will prob find its the monthly section meetings that you will attend though
you negotiate the facility time, you need at least 2 hours a week for your weekly resource meetings and negotiate for conduct and disciplinary matters

a good piece of learning would be the ACAS CODE OF PRACTICE ON UNION RELEASE TIME

also look at

the trade unions and labour relations cosolldation act 1992

your branch secretary will send you on residential courses to learn all your responsabilities but learning on the job is the norm with support from your branch

you will not get much praise, that i can assure you on but remember

you are dealing with peoples lives and jobs

dont be a draconian thug or a pussy with staff or management

education is the key

managers hate it as you will know more than them

I'd be slightly concerned if i asked our new rep why they took the job and they reeled off what you have just said.

Just our current rep in my office in Scotland has a Monday to Friday shift because he's the rep, apparently he has to have that so he's on the same shift as the Dom.
Those questions were mainly me finding out what perks he's getting, I'm more or joining to help ppl, and certainly won't b demanding a Monday-Friday job.

try and recruit a health and safety rep or sub rep as well

like you have said

being a rep is not 9 to 5 or mon to friday

So is it wrong that he has his shift inline with the doms? Surely this must b the Dom saying to him I will give u a Monday -Friday if u sign this off etc

Well his job was made for him a few months ago and we had a resign and the job he signed for was not advertised as a Monday- Friday job.

divide and conquer by the dom it seems and the rep is to dumb to see it

I'm not really surprised its happening elsewhere. The union is such a mess at the mo.

why did staff keep quiet on this and let it happen

there are agreements and proceedures in place to stop this
