Queen's Speech does nothing for economy, says CWU

The Queen's Speech is a missed opportunity to do something positive for the economy, the Communication Workers Union says today, and instead promotes an anti-worker agenda undermining employment rights.

Responding to one of the shortest Queen's Speeches in recent years, CWU general secretary Billy Hayes said "the detail is still scarce, but early indications are not good for ordinary working people.

"Simply making it easier to sack people doesn't encourage companies to hire staff, it just further undermines the flimsy employment rights that UK workers already endure" Billy explained in response to the announcement of reforming employment regulations.

The speech included precious little detail of the Bills to be brought before Parliament. These include a Draft Communication Data Bill - dubbed a 'Snoopers Bill' - which would provide data about online and phone communications to the police and intelligence services. The government says this would not include the content of messages, only the number or address of senders and receivers and date, time and duration of communications. It is unclear what the practicalities for telecom companies and internet service providers are at this stage.

"We were hoping for some positive action to stimulate the economy, and create and protect jobs and services, but this has proved another missed opportunity by the Tory-led government," said Billy. "We welcome moves to reform the unelected House of Lords and to give shareholders greater power over executive pay, but it is unclear what real effect this will have at this stage. Overall, the negatives far outweigh the positives."

The Pastie, granny tax and the pensioners tax allowance reduction are all vote losers, its telling the people that the Government is out of touch.

Don't waste Parliament's time tinkering with the House of Lords, Gay marriage, irrelevant and petty legislations, we got bigger fish to fry, the economy and jobs.

the trouble is that the labour party has as near it bankrupted the country. as we in the eu and how i wish we aint we have to bail them out to. yes i hear you cry we aint giving money to the eu but we are through the imf. the sooner the piigs, also known as pigs, go under and get everything sorted the better

Bankrupted the country . Well if you measure the deficit as a % of GDP then the current deficit is not that bad historically. Strangely during the recent years of Labour rule, the debt was not growing as fast till Brown took over, mind you Brown was not a master of fiscal matters, selling gold at the lowest level, changing the rules on Taxes and Pensions causing most of the pension deficits we are struggling through, and the 10% fiasco.

Even so when the Conservatives were last in power the deficit seemed to be on a bit of a roller-coaster ride.



However, I do believe in about 20 years time we will once again be blaming another political party for causing a deficit problem. For instance the Conservatives have taken on our pension and are selling the assets and keeping the debt. In effect within a few months they will have £8 billion of debts with no collateral. Also I think a big mistake is the conservative now issuing governments' bonds with no time limit. Basically someone can buy a gift-bond and never repay it except for the interest. I also thing their current policies of extending the retirement age coupled with the ever increasing youth unemployment will come home to roost at some point.

Basically my impression is we are f****d now, but in future years the last 10 years are going to be looked back on with fondness as the real crap has not hit yet. The government are trying to take on the deficit but with even the city questioning their growth plans some are asking if there is any point. If you don't have enough people working then the deficit is going to grow, and your not going to get more people in employment without trying to make the economy grow.

Back in the day when economies were under pressure they tended to invade other countries and steal their resources. Our government can't even get that right recently. (Thats a joke BTW in no way do I condone invading another country, in fact I am against it)

So to recap no one party is to blame, even though both main parties blame each other. Both have policies that have contributed to the mess and neither seems to have any plans to dig us out of it any time soon, in fact both seem to digging the hole deeper and deeper.
