Recently started as a postman - I'm really enjoying the actual delivery, but am getting constantly hassled by the DOM about my speed. I was given just 2 days' training, after which he seemed to expect me to be as fast as an experienced postie. I've been there 2 weeks now, and while he admits I've improved, it's apparently not enough. He's been constantly reminding me that "new starters should normally be up to speed by their 3rd day", and is now threatening me with dismissal if I don't "improve to the required standard" (whatever that may be) within the next week. I feel like I haven't been given a chance. I've now joined the union, as I fear I may need them sooner than I thought :cry

one day my friend the karma will kick in for nasty pieces of s**t like this.what person with an ounce of any decency would threaten somebody with the sack after a few days of a new job......vermin

Rubbish!
it takes me at least a full week - to be up to speed on a new round. I have been fortunate in that I have always been covering holidays/long term sick so I get a good chance to get to know whatever round I'm put on.
If I was on a different round every day (like many are), and was expected to be as fast as the experienced guys in 3 days I'd be long gone (walked out or sacked I'm not sure)

Thanks for all your replies. I feel a lot better today, having spoken to the assistant manager who thinks I'm doing fine. And Dimdom didn't say anything to me today, which I'll take as a compliment as he normally only ever opens his mouth to moan. There's a rumour in the office that he was "moved" from another office for harrassment, which doesn't surpise me.
At least it looks as though my job is safe for the moment, which is a relief as I'm really enjoying it.

Your manager is full of crap :no no

They (managers) have a budget for paying overtime for new starters to allow them to get up to speed which takes weeks rather than days.

Good move with joining the Union if you have managers like that

Are you in the Union? If so seek advice from him/her.
My only advice to you is be yourself and do NOT let this manager get to you, he is perhaps provoking you so you do go a bit faster, just smile at him and say good morning before he next speaks to you, just fob him off in general until he moves onto someone else ;liar
NO bags on shoulders please except for Moya who keeps her big fat wage packet in hers
