3 Month contract?

Varies from place to place no doubt, but talking to the resident 60 something year old lady who has worked in our delivery office all her life, she has never seen anyone not have their contract extended indefinately. Even the bordering on useless so and so's.

I've now been here about 18 months and I'm not aware of anyone not being extended. For me it was 3 months, 3 months, permanent.

There's at least three line managers at our place on renewable 3 month contracts (get the extra paid in every week). I've just gone past two years on them. No-one's beeen made permanent for ages.

It's only the people who really cock-up that have been let go at ours - repeated complaints/losing specials/wilful delay/losing keys. As long as you keep your nose clean you should be ok. Unless there's a revision of duties coming up at your office?

Same here, only guy to be got rid of* decided to go to lunch in Tesco's customer restaurant. Manager happened to be passing and noticed an unlocked trolley. Waited for half an hour and matey comes out and says there was no where to lock it to and it was his lunch break.

* he was so stupid a number of people speculated that he'd been forced to take the job by the Social as such was doing everything to get the boot.

The contract i signed says something like, 'The reason for your contract being for a fixed term is that it is anticipated the requirement for your employment is likely to cease on or about the expiry date because of business reorganisation.
This date reflects our expectation of when the need for your services is likely to come to an end but this could be sooner or later. if sooner, notice will be given under clause 13.'

That's the standard letter/wordage ... so far I've had 6 month /6 month / 3 month / 3 month / 3 month / 3 month ... and the song remains the same ...

Thought that after a year they had to make you permanent.

I've just been told by the rep that it is after 2 years.

There is an agreement between the Union and Royal Mail that says 2 years. However as reported on previous threads RM are ignoring it in some areas.

The Law of the land is 4 years.

This is just a device to have 'flexibility' for when we are sold to DHL/ TNT/ whoever and they want 'low hanging fruit' to sack. A short term contract like this should really be converted to fully employed after one year continuous. Depends on your DOM and union rep - if either or both are useless????? then you are stuck in the corridor of uncertainty.

Im sure this has been asked many times before, so my apologies. But 3 month contracts, how likely is it that these get renewed? I ask because with the way the current job market is I guess i should start looking for another job now if there just gonna say 'see ya later' in 3 months time!

We have people in our office on a 3 month contract,and they have been told by the manager that if they come back with mail,or try to claim o/t then their contract will not be renewed.what a nice way to treat people.mail is down 25 % again this week,and we no longer deliver Amazom.

Don't think I could describe my fruit as "low hanging" - it's probably just the ill-fitting RM trousers ...
