Another job

I'm sure I'm not the only to notice that the scope for doing overtime has pretty much dried up to nothing over the last 12/18 months.

Is there and if so whats the procedure for getting an external second job i.e. part time evenings with regards RM? do you need to tell them? etc

What you do outside rm work times is nothing to do with rm, so you can work as much as you like. Only problem is if the other work you do is driving and you also drive for rm as you can only drive a certain amount over a 24 hour period so you have to inform rm about that. If not then its none of their business.

....unless they consider it a conflict of interest. My contract mentions something about it but it's not around to look at. But I doubt they'd be too happy if you were working at TNT or UPS or somewhere on the side. Otherwise, it doesn't matter.

I know about the driving thing but was under the impression that you had to at least inform RM that you had another job. Would have thought that RM would find out anyway as no employer seems to take anyone these days without previous job references. Not currently sure what I'll do just that even over the Christmas period there was zip overtime so need to find something..... maybe an agency?

Not sure if thats the case now but when we finished at the decent time of 11am i used to do a delivery, then drive for the then named lynx express parcels in the afternoon. But things may have changed nowadays.

Dug out my contract. It's from September 2011 so others may be different. But anyway:

"...[y]ou must declare all outside business interests that have the potential to conflict with the commercial interests of Royal Mail or any of the Royal Mail Companies which is like to bring Royal Mail....into desreput[e]...such outside business interests include but are not limited to any outside employment, directorships or material shareholding."

It says: "you are employed on an exclusive basis"

its posts like this that royal mail should be ashamed.you have staff lookin for other work coz the moneys sh@@.why the hell should we look for work when we do f@@@ more then the fat cats who our on 40-50k a year makes me sick

I think its more the hours that they give you in PT contracts rather than pay, whcih (dont say this too loudly) I actually think isn't too bad, you only have to look at comparable courier firm jobs to see that.

The way RM are doing things these days it wouldn't surprise me if they used this to sack me even if my other job was a few hours shelf stacking in the evenings for a local supermarket. Then again I'm 95% certain that if I asked the DOM the answer would be no

In fairness to RM I'm looking to buy a property and although the costs are affordable I'd like to get a bit more in my rainy day fund what with all the RM changes going on and the mortgage rate is only going to go one way..... UP!

Some of the lovely things about RM back in the day were that A) you got to finish early so you had the afternoon to yourself. B) The only way to get sacked was to nick, fight or Wilful delay C) If you had some unexpected bill or wanted some extra cash then there would be some OT available somewhere. Despite asking every day on the run up to Christmas I didn't/couldn't get a single minute of OT . I've managed to work a couple of my rest days since the new year but thats it.

The only problem with that is all those retained firefighters, TA, play police (I think they're called Community Support Officers) would all have to go and you can just imagine what the Daily Wail would say about that

Royal Mail can't stop you having a second job but you have to sign the opt-out for the 48hr max working week regulations and if they believed it was having an adverse effect on your performance they could go down that route although how they would measure that is anybody's guess.
The driving regulations are really only likely to apply to professional drivers whose driving time is measured.

I've already signed the 48hr opt out thing and theres no chance of me working for a competitor of any description as there aren't any around here. Word would spread like wildfire if I was seen working at a local supermarket or McDonalds so management would find out. Its the the completely arbitrary way that rules are implemented in my office that worries me or put differently who exactly is involved and which side of the bed the DOM got out of that particular morning. I can't do anything that puts my RM job on the line for obvious reasons especially in the current climate of RM using 'any excuse' on us old timers
