Chief executive Moya Greene received a good reception when she addressed the CWU’s conference in Bournemouth today.

Moya is the first chief executive of our company to address the union’s annual event, attended by hundreds of union representatives.

Moya acknowledged there are differences between the company and the CWU but stressed it was important to work together.

‘We can’t ignore what has happened in the past and there are issues to resolve,’ she said.

‘But wouldn’t it be powerful if in all 1,400 delivery offices, in every mail centre and on every shift, talk was less about grievances and more on how we win business and take on the competition.

‘Our relationship over the last 25 years has not always been good for the company. There has to be a better way.

‘It is essential if we are to be successful. Let us not take our frustrations out on each other but focus on succeeding in a competitive environment.’

The enemies are outside the business, not within she added. Let’s stand up for Royal Mail she urged.

Need for fair competition
Moya warned that TNT’s delivery trial in West London posed an ‘immediate threat’ [to the Universal Service].

She said: ‘I am fearful that competition, if it does not have regulatory conditions imposed [by Ofcom], will soon begin a spiral of decline in Royal Mail that will be very difficult to staunch.’

Introducing Moya to delegates, CWU deputy general secretary Dave Ward praised Moya for her firm stance on regulation.

He said it was right for the union to have had a platform at the Operations and Modernisation conference for around 3,500 managers in Birmingham last month. Dave said it showed the company was willing to engage with the union.

Price rises
Moya also addressed the issue of next week’s price rises.

She stressed they were essential to protect the Universal Service and still good value.

Moya said there were still a few hard years to go to turn the company round.

She recognised the changes we are making to modernise the business are difficult for people.

‘I feel very confident that we will find a way forward and Royal Mail will continue to be a great employer.’
