Performance pressure:A letter in the Voice
Performance pressure
I write to you with grave concern regarding the union’s position on performance issues.
This indeed does relate to prep times. Our office is in the middle of the first half of the new working
agreement, a lot of problems have arisen over getting finished on our time and the thorny issue of
performance standards has been brought up.
Worst of all, I am told the union has agreed to these performance timings.
I am by no means the fastest postman, but neither do I feel I am slow. However under these new
prep times that is exactly what I am being told.
This does wonders for my morale as you can imagine! I am feeling under pressure.
Could you please clear this worrying issue up for everyone?

CWU assistant secretary Bob Gibson replies:
The tools we have agreed with Royal Mail for delivery offices are not designed to be used for individual
performance. There is a separate national agreement that covers this - Royal Mail Individual Performance Standards - and any other type of approach is not agreed with the CWU.
If management persist in using anything else, then a disagreement should be registered in the office to prevent this. The agreed tool is the IWT and this tool is about office performance not individual
performance. I should also make it clear that the CWU has not agreed to 100BSI in the Business Transformation: 2010 And Beyond agreement or as part of the IWT.
Indoor performance is determined in line with the Setting Indoor Performance agreement. Also, the prep time will be affected by the volume of walk-sequenced mail you receive and the mix of mail you
receive - i.e. letters, flats and packets - and whether you have one address per slot or two addresses per slot, assuming you are working on an RM2000 frame, and whether that is a standard frame.
So there are a number of influencing factors at play. It is not as simple as some people who have never performed a delivery in their life would like to make out.
If you are coming under pressure, then make your rep aware. In your case I have forwarded your letter to
your area delivery rep so that he can offer you assistance.

Good to know that the indoor working tool cannot be used to single anyone one person out.

It's actually a problem in NI, the managers are running riot here and bugger all is done, suppose just as long as London is OK then bugger everyone else.

Re: Performance pressure:A letter in the Voice
Our planner has said a revision has to be set at 100BSI as they all are. Setting it to what your office is performing at is a better idea but trying to find that out is like the old needle in a haystack. Managers doing our work, people coming in early cause they dont want a bullying manager on their back, people not taking full breaks....the list goes on but with all this happening you cant get an accurate performance rate.

I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

So drunk so I really shouldn't commentPOSTMAN wrote:Walk then.DGP1 wrote:It's actually a problem in NI, the managers are running riot here and bugger all is done, suppose just as long as London is OK then bugger everyone else.
But (oh crap) it's so hard to walk, so few FTers that will walk, it's really only me and a few others who will, not enough to make a difference but enough to get us sacked over it
We all know the NI issue and what trouble it got this site into a few years ago (I know the details that others don't and they're not good).

Its the same at our spot which isnt a million miles away from you. Basing all our revision work on 100BSI when i reckon its nearer 90 maybe even 85. This can make a huge difference to indoor hours as well so its crucial its the correct figure.woofwoof wrote:this is happening in hull
