Is it really neccessary for postie's to work later on Saturday's ? Do the customers want their mail at 2.30pm on a saturday afternoon . 2.30 is our finish time all week in our office now

Depends who you think the customer is in this age. To us it's the people who aren't in on a Saturday afternoon cause they're out having a life beyond work. To RM it's the business mass mailers who want their stuff dispatched for weekend reading.

sadly it will never happen,this has been brought up so many times before but there doesnt seem any sense of urgency on behalf of the cwu to pursue this matter.

No, it is not necessary for postmen/women to be plodding the streets after 1.00pm on a Saturday. In fact, 12.30 finishes should be the order of the day on Saturdays.
There are two reasons why postal workers in deliveries work later than ever on Saturdays.

1. Senior management, purely down to their spite & malice that they INSISTED we work later on Saturdays.

2. A very weak union, partly in hock to senior management, complied with senior management's order.

TBT the motion at Conference is different from the previous motions on the Monday to Friday as it states should any new buyer or Royal Mail attempt to changer the USO then the CWU should campaign for a Monday to Friday service.

At the Royal Mail operations and Modernisation conference Mark Higson said it would be suicide for Royal Mail if they removed Saturdays and would kill their ambition to gain more of the packet market and the advertising market. The USO is now guaranteed for at least 10 years so I can't see support for this motion next week.

Now Dirty Harry I and the CWU would love to see early Saturdays restored and argued against later Saturdays but unless Royal Mail decide to not use automation on a Friday night and change the workplan completely for Friday night then you will continue to get your mail arriving in delivery offices the same time it does on the other days of the week. hence why Saturday's have moved later. Sad but true but Royal Mail cannot on one hand say to the government we want money for all these machines but we don't intend to use them on a Friday night as our staff want to finish early on a saturday.

Yeh exactly why would a trade union mould terms and conditions to reflect the evolution of a fluctuating postal market in an effort to protect jobs. strange that

I reckon it will be 9 til 5 soon, Royal Fail will continually make working life unbearable so we leave and in doing so they will save millions on pensions and other entitlements we get.

If RM could accept Wave 2 being Walksorted on CSS machines and adjust workplans and distribution runs accordingly there is no reason why Saturday could not be a unique attendance with earlier finish times provided staff in the DOs were willing to absorb the additional workload of receiving the mail in this way.

I have heard DOMs and DSMs continually say Saturday is just another working day, well it's not, it's part of the weekend and Royal Mail's commitment ( ) to family friendly attendance structures should be taking issues like this on board.

Whats the point of working til late afternoon, in my office the post office shuts at 12.30 so when we have to fill out a 739 ( which is often as people are out with family enjoying themselfs) we have to put collect on Monday. Whats the point?

no one want to work late on a Saturday i know but if you look at it differently if you were off on a Saturday would not want to go to the cinema or go to the shops on the Saturday because the people there have to work a lot latter than us

Very soon nationally there is a possibility that all DOs will get Mailsort 2 and 3 together and the Mailsort 3 will arrive at MCs the day before delivery is due so then no DO will be able to hold over any Mailsort until Monday.

I can't see RM ever just walk sorting wave 2 with however many millions then CSS machines cost across the country. If they were then all they probably would do would be to send the work out to DOs later, saving them money on drivers night allowance

As i've stated before after an IWT driven revision D.O.'s do not have the indoor resource to cope with the switch back to walksort on a saturday.
There is no way that RM will re-invest these hours so the only way offices could absorb this is by starting early and skipping meal relief.
That is not a position i could support.
