P/T hours to get 1 in 4 saturday

Post by celerycelery »

How do your work out a part timers hours in some of the duty options? For example in the 9 day fortnight (5+4) a full timer does 43.45hrs 1 week, 43.15hrs another week and 34.30hrs the other 2 weeks giving a 4 week total off 156 hours. How do you calculate a 30 hour week part timer in these duties or a 25 hour part timer?

I didnt say i wanted one, but looking at the one i mentioned in the duty options it seems to be for full timers and i cant see any mention of what hours a part timer would do.

Most part timers in our office do 08:15-14:15 paired with a full timer doing double prep.

There are a few on 3 day week job shares all 9 day fortnights are full time.

As for 1 in 4 sats we were told thats only for full timers

Hi all,

On the subject of part timers and long weekends

long story short, I`m on a 25 hour contract, been with R.M for 14 months, just approached our rep about 1 in 6 long weekends off, or 1 in 4 (we are going through our revision at the mo). He has categorically said to me that I am damn well entitled to a long weekend off.
Upshot is, he says go speak to management if they refuse come back and we`ll stick in a grievance.

What say you all, is he correct in this?

cheers

Yes he is right.

Current legislation means that all employees should be treated fairly, this should mean that it does not matter what your contracted hours are, you should be treated the same as a Full Time employee.

9-Day Fortnights and Part-Time staff:

9-Day Fortnights are not just for full-time staff. The same approach can be applied to part-time attendances. This is how it would work for a 30 hour part-time contract:

10-Day Fortnight: two 5-day weeks of 6 hours per day = 2x 30 hours = 60 hours over 10 days
9-Day Fortnight (5+4): 60 hours over 9 days = one 5-day week plus one 4-day week of 6:40 per day

Notice that both of these fortnightly attendances work a total of 60 hours over the two weeks, the 10-Day Fortnight works two weeks of 30 hours (5 days each week), and the 9-Day Fortnight work one week of 33:20 hours (5 days) plus one week of 27:40 (4days). There are two other models of 9-Day Fortnights:

9-Day Fortnight (6+3): working 60 hours over two weeks, but as 6 days one week, and 3 days the next, again with the 6:40 working day for a 30 hour contract. This includes a total of 18 working days in a 4-week period, and 6 days off in 4-week period. It has two 6-day weeks, followed by two 3-day weeks. This gives one long weekend of 6 days off in a row every 4 weeks.
9-Day Fortnight (1 week off in 4): combining two 9-Day Fortnights of 78 hours, giving 156 hours of work over 4 weeks. This includes a total of 18 working days in a 4-week period, and 6 days off in 4-week period. The 1 week off in 4 is arranged by using all 6 days off at once in one week, and so working all the 18 working days over 3x 6-day weeks.

If the plan is for Saturday only Part Timers (as in not working any other day) then nothing wrong in that as the people opting for it know that they are working only on Saturday so no unfairness either implied or otherwise.

If however, only 5 day Part timers work Saturdays and 5 day FTimers don't then that is unfair in my opinion and would leave RM open to complaint over failure to comply with employment legislation - but as I say that only an opinion and I may well be wrong.

The below is an exert from the menu of options. We have a set up where the small contracts ie 22.5 contracts always work sat/mon/tues everyweek and always have wed/thur/fri as days off the blokes like em now because they are the light days and set days. We also have 1 in 4 sets for part timers

Part Time Colleagues
It should be noted that there maybe opportunities for existing part time employees to work fewer days, whilst maintaining their existing contracted hours, to support the new innovative attendance patterns. For example in option four, within this pack, it may be possible for some existing part time employees to convert their attendance to a regular Friday, Saturday, Monday attendance, working fewer days albeit for longer hours.

You would probably need the advice of an employment lawyer but at first glance that would probably be okay as they are working the same hours and getting 3 days running off a week, the other staff getting 2. I would be happier if it was volunteers only, but as I say, at first glance and with no legal training, if it was accepted by the members of the Unit, I don't think it would fall foul of the "fairness" legislation.
