Bringing mail home.

Another postman I know, in another office, did some overtime on saturday afternoon. Their office close's at 3pm. So he was told if he was late back to put van inside gate and lock yard up. He tried to get back for 3 but was five minutes late. So he locked van in yard and had to go home with van keys and half a bag of mail and small packs that he was unable to deliver in time. Just wondering if his manager has said that is ok......is it?????

There are no circumstances where taking mail home is acceptable with or without the permission of an idiot manager.

Thanks. This has happened once before, where he has tried to get back before they lock up at 3pm on saturday and was locked out. That time he had to take a full bag home and his keys, wallet, coat etc were locked in the building all weekend. He is on 6 mnth contract and is a good worker.

he should be ok i have seen it done before but he must text or ring the manager and let him no or the union rep then it must be kept locked away till it is collected

Would'nt have thought that was the right thing to do,personally
i would have left every thing in the locked van which at least was
on locked RM premises and tried to inform someone as to what i
had done.If manager was aware of a possible late finnish then he
should have left instuctions on what to do with any undelivered
mail or postman should have asked about this before leaving office.

why not leave it in the van? that seems the more sensible option, at least you wont get accused of theft

He was going to leave it in the van but wasn't sure he should. He 18 don't want to see him lose his job over something silly.

You contact your nearest M/C im sure the DIM there would of told him to bring the mail there contact IB inform them of this DIMS actions.

Reason being if this lads house gets searched and they find mail the DIM will deny telling him to take it home.

At the end of the day he should not take mail home full stop if his head rolls hes to blame as much as his DIM.

I suppose no one in your office has informed your REP if not how on earth is your rep going to stop this.

If I were the rep in your D/0 i would be asking for a team brief to inform all staff that they must not take mail home under any circumstances.

The DIM and the lads own actions are leading him to lose his job no matter how much of a good worker he is.

4. GENERAL

a) Employees must be made aware that mail must NEVER be taken home at the end of a delivery. Correct endorsement procedures and correct use of the pouching off wallet, if appropriate, will avoid this.
b) Although the main aim will be to avoid the circumstances that may pose operational difficulties to an employee and to find ways of overcoming any potential problem at a very early stage, it is also important that all employees are made fully aware of the implications of delaying mail and possible consequences.
c) Measures shall be put in place to advise staff on the course of action to be taken when difficulties arise when managers are unavailable.
