Pouching off

I've never really been sure what "pouching off" entails as I always go back to the depot. Today (Saturday) when I finished the depot was shut and locked. local POs were all shut at lunchtime. I have a full bag of undelivered letters and packets - ie a lot more than would go in a post box. I'm off next week - What should I do?

Pouching off is when you dump your P739'd items into sealed bag and hand them into a PO...

You should of contacted the manager who should of been in office?

put them in one of your drop boxes and text someone that you have left the mail in there.

Manager wasn't in the office (unless he'd locked himself in!) and I had no means to contact him. Nearest drop-box is over a mile up the hill from the office and I'd been told I shouldn't leave items in a drop-box.

At the end of the day I wasted a couple of hours finding a shop (in another district) with a sub-PO and (eventually) managed to persuade the owner ("Post office is closed - you'll have to go to the depot") to take my items.

I don't carry a sealed bag for pouching off, (I will do in future) as I've always went back to the office, but the packets I have left at the end of a walk usually wouldn't fit into one.

Not really sure what to think about this... firstly, surely the OPG would have been advised in training what to do with mail that couldn't be delivered and should/would have known that there would have been a problem with early closings of PO/DO on a Saturday and made arrangements. Then again have to say one of my biggest dislikes about RM is how managers seem to disappear ASAP especially on a Saturday leaving OPG's in potentially sackable situations with no official guidance. They'd say you should have advised them before you went out, then again situations change.

I have a rule which oddly is also an RM rule..... I NEVER EVER take mail home under ANY circumstances. Firstly I'd sign up what I couldn't deliver then put it into post box's multiple box's if needed. If I had any items that didn't fit I'd take them to a local MC. Have had to do this twice ( once for 2x739 specials) both times handing off only to a manager explaining the situation (need to cover your back) who wasn't too pleased but WTF.

You don't say why you had so much to return i.e. cutting off or access issues but in the current climate you need to be thinking ahead and if there is even a tiny jot of an issue even if its only potential you should be telling your DOM. They're paid to worry about this sort of thing NOT you.

Have you left a message on the office answer phone explaining what has happened? Did you tell the DOM before you left that you may not complete? If not be prepared for a charge of 'Wilful Delay'. Managers should'nt go home before the last person is back but we all know the majority leave as soon as the last person has gone out on delivery.

The items left-over were the packets and recorded deliveries that I have P739-ed, plus the odd letter that I wasn't able to access (door control, shut etc) I endorsed everything before handing them over at the shut PO.

Sorry, my first post might have made it seem I had the bag of undelivered mail home with me- (tho' if I hadn't been off on Monday I would have been sorely tempted to do so) Hopefully I've covered myself(?) as I really don't want to be worried about going back to a disciplinary after my break.

To be fair this is the first time the office has been closed - tho' I had a similar situation when out on loan when I started - but yes there seems to be a tendency in RMG to throw you out at all costs and leave you in potentially sack-able situations, where the first time you know you've done something wrong is when you're being disciplined...

Like I say - I didn't take mail home, though first post might read like that. Meant it to read "what should I have done?" but after a few glasses of vino after a hard and frustrating day...

I'm on holiday, and already wasted a couple of hours yesterday running around trying to sort it. I'm taking it from the other posters that I've covered myself?

Like I said I hadn't tried to leave undelivered items anywhere other than in the office before, and only realised yesterday that my other option, POs close early on a Saturday.
