holidays given in hours rather than weeks

We have been told that this is national and would like some advice as this is coming into effect now.. if you are fulltime and get 5 weeks holiday it is now paid 39x5 =195 thats fine if you do the same attendance hours daily,If you do 10 hour days and want a day of you lose 10 hours of your 39x5 making it likely u will lose hours into another days holiday ,another example if you are on a 9 day fortnight and do 4 days one week and 5 the next week on 9 hour days like some in our office are if you take the longer working week off a weeks holiday is going to cost a extra day holiday so 5 weeks could end up 4 can thet do this.

It shouldn't make much difference if your leave was being calculated correctly under the old system. Obviously if you work 10 hour days you use more leave if you take a day off, it would not be fair to do it any other way. Otherwise 30 days leave entitlement would give an 8 hr day 6 weeks off and a 10 hr day 7.5 weeks off.

If you're on a 39hr week you won't do 10hr days you will do 9hr45min days unless you are banking the extra hour which will cover the difference anyway.

i get what your saying but surely 6 weeks holiday should just be 6 weeks holiday regardless of hours worked and a day should be a day, The main problem is because of the 9day fortnights and people choosing to take the longer working week of on holiday.

No. How is that fair? You would end up with some people getting more time off that others even though their leave entitlement is supposed to be the same. Using hours for leave is the fairest way of doing it as it ensures everyone gets the same amount of time off regardless of attendance pattern. If people are losing out in your office then the chances are the leave was not being calculated properly under the old system anyway since leave entitlement should still have been adjusted to take into account different attendance patterns.

If you go to a 9 day fortnight to accomodate the 1 in 4 saturdays off then your holidays will be less if you do the 9 day fortnight with the 52 hour week as youll lose 52 hours from your holiday entitlement instead of the 39 hours with the 1 in 6 saturdays off.

That's because you're getting an extra day off every fortnight though.
You have to pay for that extra day whether you're working or on holiday otherwise why should you get it?

Yeah i see what you mean now. So over a 4 week period on the 9 day fortnight you work 156 hours exactly the same as a 4 week period on at the moment the 1 in 6 (39hours X 4 weeks). But the 1 in 6 option you have 4 days off over the month whereas in the 1 in 4 9 day fortnight you have 6 days off. Is that right?????

and just think.......if you want to you can take 1 hours a/l or 2 hours and there is nothing they can do about it.use the system against them and see how they like it.

The 1 in 6, based on the 39hours working week is 46hrs 48mins. We lose some of our A/L for this option, always have done since 1-6 was introduced.
