van locks drilled

1. Has any other delivery office had their double-locked secure vans drilled on the locks? This has apparently happened in 3 areas that I know of and drivers suspended or sacked.

2. Has anyone had a WTLL session about securing vans and checking locks for any interference before leaving the delivery office?

3. Does anyone know of any PDA messages or urgent memos concerning the above?

4. If anyone does know of any lock-tampering, were attempts made to disguise the drilled area, e.g. with red filler?

If anyone does have any knowledge of the above happening, please let us know. No need to be too specific on area, but it would be nice to know the number of times this is happening and the general area, e.g. South east, North Wales, etc. and, how the Royal Mail have dealt with the drivers but particularly interested in any memos etc. having been sent to delivery drivers about this, giving specific warnings, if any.

I expect you do not want to name the office you are speaking of or from come to that but my office (North West) have had 2 cases in the last 12 months, the first case the lad thankfully kept his job after a lengthy suspension and good Union representation. The second case is on going because it only happened recently and I hope he gets the same outcome as the first case, he is a good employee has great knowledge of the town and districts and a good character within the office.

PDA email message today (10th April) was about making your van secure when unattended.

I have never had training on the security vans but I do feel that if you have to do a duty with a security van you should have a partner while performing the duty, there is a reason why the vans need securing and the low life's who do drill these vans know the reason also, Royal Fail will let you do a duty with many valuables in it but they do not value your safety.

Twice in one office, eh? Why wait for it to happen again before sending PDA messages out?
Sounds like RM are kind of locking the stable door after the horse has bolted doesn't it? Perhaps the fault lies more with them than the drivers, even our 'secure' car park isn't secure so perhaps RM should accept that they are 99% to blame for it for withholding training and knowledge that this is going on and failing to take reasonable security precautions themselves.

We've had no messages on our PDAs about van security at our office but I've heard that it has happened in Manchester and Merseyside areas over the last year or so. Sorry but don't know any other details

We can learn more from this site than we can from the RM themselves.

I was trying to stake a claim by having a main driver with the other popping in to deliver the special, sorry I did not explain properly

From what I heard at least one of them forgot to double lock the van but we've all had concentration lapses, the real question is did the royal mail know that van locks had been tampered with in the past and failed to notify the employees to be aware of it at the time not 12 months later as it would appear from one response.

If its like my car its a double blip on the remote. As far as I understand it - the first blip physically locks the doors, the 2nd blip engages the software that means you can't open the door without the correct key, or start the engine either. So one is physical locking the 2nd activates the security systems.

The secure vans have an extra lock (a mortice lock) on the back door with a separate key.
