Does seniority count for anything nowadays?

The reason i ask is that in our office we have had quite a few people leave through retirement/ill health etc recently, yet still there has been no re-pick due to the 'majority' voting against such a move..now we have the ridiculous situation where the least senior person has the most senior persons duty!
This happened because this young AG was moved off his part time duty to accommodate another AG, so seeing as the most senior persons duty was there for the taking and being made up full time to into the bargain this AG was given the duty with the blessing of his CWU reps and our 'manager'..(we call it the friends and family club)..thus causing quite a bit of 'unrest' among other staff and denying other more senior staff like myself the opportunity of having this duty?

you can not vote on if you have a re-sign if you meet the criteria then you have one ? has 31% of the office changed or the times changed by more than 30 min if so there has to be one. this seem to be happening in a lot of offices whats going on with the union the national agreements are there for a reason

Seniority only works if you are full time or you can drive the rest of us are shat on from a great height.

6 years with 2 mini revisions and start times altered by over half hour in our office. Change of over 30 % of staff in that time and new starters and moaners left on nice duties for extended periods. No duty ever put up in all that time. Still no repick, a disgrace, what is the union doing about it? Collaborating with the management in our office.

We're being told in our office that using seniority for deciding annual leave is a no-no so what is going to happen come a re-pick/re-sign I don't know.

Apparently it's discriminatory although I can't see how - It's not sexist, it's not racist and it's not ageist.

Surely the job in question should be advertised on notice board for a few weeks and then given to the most senior applicant.

Seniority counts for a number of things still. For example offers on VRs are now down to voluntary redundancies .

In terms of resigns I realise a number of people quote the way forward but fail to mention MTSF 2.

MTSF 2 has meant that resigns in mail centres and in larger delivery units where there are still a number of nights resigns are restricted to those which do not attract allowances.

Where a delivery unit has no allowances , and has a major revison including delivery methods than a resign should take place. However some duties will be restricted to only drivers in regards to CDVs.

However age discrimination has changed the default position on seniority as well when the rule use to be for those who joined on the same day , when was your interview etc to who ever was older was more senior. This is no longer allowed and talks are underway concerning this.

Every time someone leaves the job and there has been bout 15 in the last few weeks alone,,,incl senior guys who've had enough,, the full time duty is then made part time . We now have a situation where we've hardly any sorters ,even then it's a nightmare sorting as the part timers all come in early and every 5 minutes there clearing off there mail!! As we've hardly any sorters ,,were constantly watched,timed,told to stop speaking ,is there nothing a rep could do about this? Were not fcking machines!

I would say if you're outside the top 5 or maybe 10 in a big delivery office it's pretty much useless already.
One CDV duty looks much the same as another.
When you consider you could be waiting 25-30 years to join that elite if i was a new start i wouldn't be getting excited about moving up the list.

Well I suppose that's true. I spoke to a bloke who had over 30 years in and was 5th on our list. The revision removed his bulk duty and it was then relegated to bits and bobs left over from other walking duties plus an indoor element for which he was totally unsuitable. He has had to choose a P&L duty and he is not very happy. I asked him to speak to the rep this week and would have gone with him but I'm on leave. In the old days it was pretty straight forward, every duty in, everyone picked in seniority order, no ifs ands or buts. We went through it and it's only in these lean years of union involvement that things have gone awry.

14.6 When the number of consequential vacancies in the resourcing unit reaches 5%, or after a period of six months following the last such exercise (if earlier), the posts will be advertised in the resourcing unit, en bloc and filled on the basis of seniority. If this results in any further vacancies, these will be filled, using the same process as above.
