Does PHG have any authority over normal postie?

Just a quick question really. Does PHG have any authority over normal postie? With being on same pay grade and all.

Im saying this because our new PHG, who was a normal delivery postie before, seems to love the new role and taking it in her stride to boss the delivery posties about.

I fail to see the problem here. Lots of people in our office have ideas on how the job should be done and aren't afraid to say or tell everyone else. At the end of the day if it isn't an RM rule/policy etc then people just ignore it. At the end of the day the DOM has the final word regardless of what a postie/phg etc thinks.

Depends what you mean by bossing.

If she is telling people they can't cut off, what there duty is because she's decided, whether they can claim overtime etc - No she can't.

If however, she is working in the prio locker and telling people when they should be delivered, what they should do with the PDAs, that no one is allowed in the locker, when she will be ready to issue etc ect - then Yes she then can that's part of her duty.

Excuse my ignorance but I thought that the PHG grade had finished and that everyone is now an OPG (with some having PHG pay on reserved rights). If there are still the 2 grades and you start to factor in Team Leaders (who can be OPGs) then the whole thing starts to get a little confusing.

Team Leaders have more responsibility but NO SUPERVISORY or MANAGERIAL powers. They can advise staff but not INSTRUCT.

Ignore the PHG part its a red herring. However most people call OPGs in ex leadership positions such as Prio Locker, Key Locker etc PHGs - so the focus is on the task.

Also as Budfrog says, and as I suggested previously, if the job they have involves advising posties on processes and rules then yes they can advise but not instruct.

It all depends on the situation, some at my office get angry because the Prio Locker said something to them. "They can't tell me what to do" - correct but are they just advising you of something - if they really are Instructing you to do something outside of their responsibility then bang in a grievance, if all they are saying is you have to get a manager to authorise that - then they are doing their job by giving advice not an instruction.

There is no PHG grade. There are jobs which require people to be more assertive than in the normal OPG role, such as the priority locker or book room. I work in the locker by myself, often the manager will instruct me to pass on instructions which are relevant to the day, people may misconstrue that the instruction comes from me when in fact it is merely as a messenger.....................that's what I tell them. Of course people still abuse me and I often go home in tears because of it because I am a sensitive person

In our office, the "PHG" was generally responsible for staff when the managers weren't there. I was WPC and another guy who worked in there was paid the supervisor allowance. We opened and locked up and had to deal with any issues when the managers were AWOL (which, I'm sure you can imagine, was a lot of the time!). So I think if the PHG is asking of you a reasonable request that's within the parameters of your duty/contract, then what's the problem?

I think it all depends what your definition of bossing about is.

phg's are just bone idle and do their best to get out of any real work and sit around telling tales and kissing managers arse's.
