this happened a number of years ago....
to cut a long story short i was an AG (new starter) a family emergency came up whereupon i had to leave the UK for several months to sort out this particular problem(which i did)..my manager/DOM at the time said that because i was good at my job he would keep my contract open until i returned (unpaid of course)..this was decent of him i thought then,but i have now discovered that either the business or my manager(who has since retired) had deducted six months of seniority from me.
Can either the business or my manager do this?
Seems odd to me as obviously he wanted to keep me employed and i took unpaid leave to sort out this mess out abroad..so why did i lose six months seniority when obviously it hadn't cost Royal Mail anything?

Way Forward.
13.6 All service within an appropriate grade, whether on permanent or temporary basis, will count for seniority purposes, with the exception of any periods worked on a casual contract, or during a career break or sabbatical. Unpaid leave will count provided there is no break in contact. Service after age 60 will continue to count. However service must be continuous for seniority purposes, with periods prior to any break in contract (due to re-employment, for example) not generally included, unless there are exceptional circumstances applying to particular cases that are agreed at local level.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
