intimidation/victimisation?

Post by Samwell »

Have gone off with stress after walking out from work on Friday. We started our new duties approx 2 months ago. In the main as a pair we are able to complete on time. In recent weeks we have been made to do extra sorting, generally when this happens we will cut off. Our DOM turned up the heat recently and I was threatened with conduct for cutting off on one of the days. Last Friday she stationed managers behind staff as they prepped their frames. No explanation, managers did not speak, they just stood and stared. By no coincidence it was people that have been cutting of who were targeted. We had the pleasure of the DOM standing and watching us. After a time she came up to me and said I had triggered a stage 3. I was shocked as although I am on stage 2, I had had 1 period of 3 days off, therefore should not have triggered stage. I feel she is trying to get rid of me and she has almost succeeded. I will be putting in grievance, but, what to do about stage 3?

If you had had only one period of three days before walking out then I'd suggest you get yourself back to work otherwise you're genuinely going to trigger a Stage 3!

While all this was happening what were your colleagues doing, what was your rep doing if you have one.

I would suggest that you put in a Grievance about being treated that way for 'cutting off' issue, because there is no agreement that says they can threaten to use the Conduct Code against people who have to 'cut off'. Performance is not a Conduct issue, and there are no individual performance standards that apply to anyone across the whole of their prep. You might find these useful:
CWUMembersBulletin_IPStandards_2011-12.pdf
CWU Branch Notice_Cutting Off_2010-11-26.pdf
Conduct Code Appendix 3_Updated.doc
If you feel you have been victimised, or bullied, by management threats or intimidating behaviour, then you might consider putting in a bullying and harassment claim. But that would have to be about the way you were treated, and how you felt, not about the 'cutting off' question itself, which is a Grievance about them not following proper procedures. Best to read the details of the Bullying & Harassment Procedure first.

If you find you want to put in a Bullying & Harassment claim, here is the policy and the form to fill in:
B&H procedure_2005.pdf
e-Harassment and Bullying complaints form (H1).xls

Probably already been triggered 10 days or 2 abscences in 6 months.

We've had a lot of B & H in our office since P & L came in, people in tears and the sick gone through the roof. Unfortunately not one of the members want to act on it in fear of making the problem worse. As reps there is'nt much we can do if people don't put or won't put the forms/paperwork in. Trouble is it gives management carte blanche if they know no one is going to take it any further.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

Something your manager would be aware of and may well have used the threat as the trigger to realise the fact..............I certainly wouldn't put it past them that's for sure.

I don't know how long you have been with RM but I was talking to our DOM today reminiscing about the old days and how things have totally changed in recent years. The shop floor union organisation was totally different and peoples perception of the union in the workplace has changed because the local organisation has been allowed to deteriorate to the extent that it is now powerless.

they were getting on with prepping their frames, I said to union rep "something has got to be done about this" he came back to me later and said "they are just making sure things are running properly (words to that effect) because this section is experiencing problems". He later said that it was out of order?? Our DOM has a fierce reputation, we have already lost the four original line managers that were there before she came. One has transferred to another office, one took early retirement and the other two are of on long term sickness(stress).

Almost ten years. Yes, the stalwarts haven't a bad word to say about union but, most people are disappointed. Far too much has been allowed to go on and for the last two years it has been a constant. The union just say keep cutting off, which is all very well but, I'm not a lover of confrontation and it's no picnic. You find yourself in altercations and confrontations just for standing up for your rights; for your job and as a human being. I've had enough of it!

its a strange one about the stage warning as the manager sorta doesnt have any control over the trigger, stage warnings are triggered by HR, so if he has said you have triggered a stage its because HR have emailed him to process that, the only way to have triggered the stage was if you had more than one absence recorded, but the stage documentation will show you the dates of your sick record anyway so you will see if its actually due

Its a she! Well, could be that information returned to HR from our office is incorrect? They seem to have abandoned return to work interviews altogether. I haven't seen paperwork yet. Apparently I'm supposed to be notified in writing anyway, according to my rep? I know several people who are putting in complaints now, so they have to listen.

The question needs to be asked: Why are people not making official complaints? Seems to be the same everywhere. Could it be that people just have no faith in fair hearing and that bullying and harassment are so much part of the culture, managers are protected? I'd like to write to Moya
