Death in family

Post by FrankFurter »

Can anyone help? My dad was admitted in to hospital 3weeks ago and wasn't given long to live so I stayed with him for four days until he passed away. I notified my manager and he said I didn't have to rush back to work and could come back to work when I'm ready. I kept in contact with my manager. I was off work for three weeks due to organising my dads funeral etc. I've now returned to work and now been told that I will have to use my holiday leave for my time off? Which will now leave me with not much holiday entitlement left for next year. What makes me more upset is the fact that if I had phoned in sick with flu then I would get paid sick entitlement rather than have to use my holiday entitlement! Can anyone give me any advice please?

Sorry to hear of your loss mate.
The guidance is this....

If arranging a funeral up to one week with pay, which includes the bereavement, arranging the funeral and any other duties (This is for arranging funerals of next of kin or as an executor).
For the death of next of kin and blood relative, (spouse, civil partner, long standing unmarried relationship, child, parent, sibling) up to one week with pay (No additional week is allowed if the person is arranging the funeral).
For a more distant relative e.g. parent in law, grandparent, aunt, uncle- one day with pay.
Discretion for additional time off in exceptional circumstances where care of a dependant is involved, however where prolonged time off is required this might be without pay or from holiday entitlement.

Sorry for your loss mate.

Low,very low,the scum seem to know about the conduct code, stage warnings and the like but not the nitty gritty of the special leave policy.
Yeah yeah I know that they really know about it but you guys get my drift.

No unfortunately not as you have already returned to work but what i would suggest is that you use your annual leave and then around the time you maybe planned to take some annual leave......you might not feel too well. :whistle

If you do overtime , do enough between now and when you were going to have your holiday to cover a weeks wage , and ask for special leave , that way at least your not on the sick , just in case you become I'll later in the year . And like ft says go sick for the next time , no harm in not playing by there rules

my gran passed away last weekend and its the funeral next week. I am on rota week off this week, so went into the DO this morning to explain what has happened. I was told that grandparents dont count for compassionate leave and that my options were as follows:

Take holiday for the day of funeral if i have any odd days (which i do)
Take unpaid leave
Work overtime to compensate for the 6 hours lost ie working 2 hours overtime for 3 days.

Is this right??? ill check with union rep when i return from rota week off but i thought that grandparents are still immediate family?

No it's not right.
The guidance for a grandparent is one day with pay.

Didn't want to start a new thread but my mum passed away on the 13th of this month, in hospital while me and family were at her bedside. Have had a week off getting Death certs, cancelling stuff and arranging funeral. Back at work now but funeral is in a weeks time and not on my rota'd day off. Is there anything in place for this or is it a local matter and down to management.

Ok update..with a lot of battling with management this is what I finally got- 1 week as hols, 2nd week as sick, 3rd week paid leave to arrange funeral. Hope this helps anyone. Please keep in mind that management will try anything not to pay you for the week paid for arranging the funeral. I got told that although it was my dad that had passed away I was only entitled to a day off for funeral unless I was the executive of the will (which I was-you should've seen the look on my managers face!!) Not what I wanted to have to go through after everything  but hey that's royal mail for you! Thanks for the advice everyone :thumbup
