Lost/Stolen pda

Colleague in our office has had her pda stolen/lost.She is now bricking it about getting the sack,so i'm after some advice on her behalf.She claims there is no way she has lost it so it has been stolen when she has been out of sight for a few seconds,unfortunately with the van unlocked.This happened in a quite rural area.She has admitted this to manager and is obviously fearing the sack.
Is there no way they can track where the pda is from its gps,or even phone the number so the pda rings and on the off chance it may be on the floor and someone answers it??? Does anyone know of other ways of finding it?
Also is this a guaranteed sackable offence,she has 5 years of a clean record???
Any advice good or bad is welcome...

we had someone who did a collection, specials 1st ppi 2nd ppi a whole van full and left it in the van over the weekend and forgot about it and was just told off. All depends on the manager but aren't the pdsa worth like 1k?

I would not say that you left it in an un locked van rather that you misplaced it.

Just a few seconds, surely she would have seen someone then? Or is it more than a 'few'?

a guy at our do lost his pda about a year ago. went to his last drop but it wasnt there. he claims he brought it back to the office in a tray and the phg mustve stacked another on top and sent it back to mc. he didnt even get a warning or counselling but our dom didnt do a lot of things "by the book". dont know if it even got reported. we never got a replacement.

If she says she left it in an unlocked van, she is in the s**t, not for leaving it but for leaving the van unlocked, if she says she doesn't have a clue where it went she will probably be still in the s**t but not quite as deep, so if first offence should be ok!

As long as you have the last log in persons name it is possible to check where and when it was last used, though it won't tell you where it is now. In order for the phone element to be used it would have to be charged. If she hasn't said she left it in a van and the van was unlocked then don't admit to that. It is more possible to have been misplaced.

We've lost a couple - actually 3 and there is a strict time limit as to whether or not you get a replacement, basically the loss has to be reported and a loss report submitted within 14 days or it won't be replaced, we found that out to our cost. There doesn't seem to be too much of a fuss made just a bit of a bollocking, which is surprising judging from the cost.

The PDA agreement is very similar to the old ABC agreement. Counselling only

If a PDA device is not needed for a delivery point, when leaving the vehicle the PDA device must be placed in the glove-box compartment or retained upon the person. Ensure that the vehicle is locked with the vehicle alarm and immobiliser set where fitted.

Which is plainly daft, if I lock away my pda when not in the van it will die, the battery life is awful and I have to leave it, in full view to charge it ( it does charge in my bipper even when the engine is not switched on )
the proper thing to have been done is for the cradles to have been fitted into the glove compartment in the first place, there is no need for it to be on the dash board etc as you have to take it off the charger to use it any!

my p&l partner, of many years standing in the job, still waits until after we've bagged up before going to get a pda, and then wonders why there are no charged pdas available. first thing i do after signing in is make sure there's one available

found a pda in my pocket when i came home on saturday. it was dead as a dodo this morning, but a quick switcheroo with another one (as is customary in our do) this morning and job's a good 'un.

my p&l partner, of many years standing in the job, still waits until after we've bagged up before going to get a pda, and then wonders why there are no charged pdas available. first thing i do after signing in is make sure there's one available

PDAs should be assigned to a duty, they should really only be picked up along with keys and Specials/Tracked just before you leave the office but then in RM everybody seems to have different procedures.

why did she report it missing ? in our do you just grab one and theres some left over they wouldnt know if yours individual went missing
