In fact why didn't police know about the dog in the first place and nab him when he left the house to sign on or collect his benefit.

"The animal went berserk after officers smashed down the front door of a family living near the Olympic Games site" - surely that's what's to be expected of an amimal or person on having their front door smashed down. Never had this sort of problem with the old Dixon of Dock Green style policing when a stern "Lets be 'avin you" was all that was needed to keep order in the rougher parts of London.

And the frightening thing is that all it takes is a couple of people with a grudge to phone the police and say you are dealing drugs from your house and wham your front door goes in early in the morning leaving your family scared stiff,and you are left with a hell off a fight to get your door replaced (Nottinghamshire police say"we had reason to believe a crime was being committed).It happened to a bloke over the road from me who's only crime was to have a go at some youths who lived in the flats at the top of the street.

I feel sorry for the coppers who were attacked, but at the same time feel sorry for the dog who was shot. The dog was only doing what any loyal pooch would do and that's protect his owners, there's no bad dogs just bad owners.

The only thing that surprises me is that this cannot be an uncommon situation for the police in London.
Every drug dealer up here has at least one dog,i assume it's much the same down there so they must surely be trained to deal with this kind of situation but looking at the pictures the training seems to have gone out the window.

Police stand by when the rioting was going on in London last summer.
Police stand by and ignore evidence of phone tapping.
Police stand by while colleagues are attacked by a bad tempered dog defending its home.
- makes me question if the police are, to use that trendy new phrase, Fit For Purpose. and they don't come cheap too, fat salaries followed by two-thirds pensions after just thirty years service.
I somehow don't think though that the police will just stand by when thousands of revellers go a bit over the top on the day of Maggie's funeral no, they'll act as if they're back at the miner's strike.

Nothing wrong with post it pegs. I have 2 houses on my walk that would be impossible to leave a single 739 (or small letter) without losing fingers, ie no other larger mail. Peg makes it possible. I have the teeth marks in the Peg to prove it

A dog which mauled five police officers during a raid in east London is thought to have been responsible for another attack last year. However Scotland Yard admitted it failed to pick up on intelligence that the "pit bull-type" animal lived at the property in Albert Square in Newham before they stormed the address.

Newham Council said it had launched an investigation last year after receiving a complaint that a dog had bitten a cyclist in the square in April 2011. Animal welfare officers visited the property on May 6, but there was no response and the matter was discussed with the police in June with no further action taken.
