4 weeks in the job

Ok so this is my 4th week in the job, and I'm starting to get the very basics right,,BUT I cant get my head round this cut off business?.
I had 2 days last week where on not leaving the office till 11:00 I was still walking/cycling till 16:00/16:30..when i mentioned this to my wpc he said I should have cut off.
Now being on a 6 month contract I want to make a good impression and hope for it to be extended.
your thoughts please.
P.S what's your other thoughts on door stepping post?. ie large packets/parcels.

me personally i dont cut off.but i,m always paid for the hrs i work.failure to be paid for going over would result in me cutting off.my manager fully understands this so dont have a problem as long as i am not going over my time everyday,which i dont.

Difficult one. You want to make a good impression and not rock the boat. The problem is this, if you don't cut off and do overtime everyday, it becomes custom and practice and is expected of you for good. That is no good if your home life changes and you need that time away from work. My advice is this. Do it for the time being until you get settled into the job. After this time if your duty is still unachievable, go to your DOM and tell him you can no longer do the overtime due to a family commitment (make summat up).

Doorstepping is a no no, but long timers know that there are exceptions which you will learn with time.

Personal choice to be honest - as long as they are paying you and you don't mind doing it then carry on. However, just once decline, especially if you have a reason that makes it necessary for you to finish at your contracted time. This will make them aware that although normally they can rely on you, they cant assume that you will work over come what may.

Depends.

1. If you mean you do not fill out any paperwork or inform the Manager then no you would not get any overtime automatically. You have to complete the local admin procedures to claim overtime.

2. If you mean can Managers refuse to pay you overtime, yes they can however they have to follow certain rules:

a. Before going out: You should inform your manager you may not complete in the time given and he can decide that you should be able to complete so he won't pay you. In this case if you still think you are going to go over you and your manager should come up with a contact plan near the end of your working day so he can make a decision.

b. After Completing Overtime - The manager can decide after you have completed the overtime that you are claiming too much (thinks you should have done it quicker/thinks you over-claiming) however he is breaking the law if he reduced the amount you claim without first discussing it with you in the first place.
