Overweight postal worker.

Post by humtydumpty »

I was interviewed by a company recruiting on RMs behalf. I'm taking a wild guess here, I am glad my interviewer wasn't a direct employee of RM because I think my app would of hit the bin the second my interview has ended. :chuckle :chuckle

Do you have over weight postmen/women working with you or perhaps you are? Because I am 15.5 st heavy, I don't walk anywhere, literally! I use buses, taxis or my motorbike. I can be lazy at times (hope this job will kick that habit right outta that window). :left: I will start soon and not sure how I am going to handle the 6+ hours of cycling and walking 6 days a week lol. Not looking forward to the sweat soaked cloths, ugh  . On the other hand, looking forward to riding a bicycle again, been 5 years. Kick starting an active lifestyle is a bonus in it self too.

Do you recommend any specific shoes/trainers I should look into buying before I start? You know, just to get me through the first few weeks without too much discomfort?

Whatever shoes are the most comfortable, whatever clothes are the most comfortable because when you're on a delivery you will be knackered no matter what you wear.

I nearly died when I first started, got used to it after awhile, its still exhausting work regardless if how fit you are especially in the summer months, I wouldn't worry about being a little overweight we have guys in our Office who would eat someone your size for breakfast =P

They'll probably let you be a driver.
Sounds like you'd fit in nicely...... :cuppa

Take painkillers before you go out on delivery at first, trust me you will need them. In the summer I usually need 2 litres of water, the only problem then is what goes in must come out :chuckle

Firstly don’t panic. :d'oh!

And welcome to the nutty forum. :wave

We have all sizes in our office. Don’t do anything stupid like go on a crash diet or something. No matter what your weight (unless your 18-25 years) you will have to go through some sort of pain barrier. This normally takes the form of blisters and chaffing. This is quite normal and we have all been through it ourselves and experienced the POSTMANS hoop syndrome.

You have joined at nice time of year in the spring when you get fresh morning starts and hopefully warm days without blistering and tiring sunshine.

Without getting personal I would recommend applying some lubrication around areas which may rub with walking. Best do this before you start your day as once the chaffing starts its murder.

Blisters are another thing to plan for as we all get them at the beginning. Normally it will take your feet a couple of weeks to build up some tougher skin. I would suggest a pack of BLISTER plasters in your bag (not normal ones) and a roll of micro porous tape as well. Finally a spare pair of cotton rich socks.

Try eating sensibly throughout the day in short snacks rather than go all day without food. If possible eat low fat snacks other than the tempting choc bars etc.

Expect a hard couple of months (bit like going to the gym every day) but it will be worth it as with sensible eating you will see the weight come off and be better for it.

Wishing you the best of luck, keep us updated of your progress. :Very Happy

Kruss

Edit. Yeah of course you can carry water. :Very Happy
