not sure what to do...will I get a warning?

I had a day off sick a ccouple of weeks ago after being up all night sick. Now my partner is really ill - I am not sure what's wrong, but it's looking like I might end up having to take her to hospital. She is certainly unable to drive which means the onus is on me to sort out our daughter in the morning, get her to school etc. I amm meant to be in work early in the morning (though currently up with sick partner) and don't know if i'll get a warning if I call in - is there a family policy anywhere?

Employees have the right to reasonable unpaid time off to deal with an emergency involving dependants. Although the statutory provision for time off to look after a dependant is unpaid, many of the circumstances may be covered by Special Leave provisions, which may be paid. I have just last week had exactly the same. I needed 2 days to look after the children as my wife was ill. Day 1 was given as special leave paid and day 2 was either unpaid or use anual leave, saying that i'm sure working a day off (if you need 2 days) should be ok with your manager to make your time back but day 1 is special leave paid.

But the guidance is 1 day exceptionally 3 days so what reason could a manager at local level give for refusal other than perhaps an ongoing pattern?
There are two separate ways to approach this...you can either exercise your statutory right to dependants leave which means it cannot be refused but it will be unpaid or apply for special leave which gives the manager the choice of paid,unpaid or the use of annual leave.

I'll second that - we've just had a bloke who's come back after a two-month absence as a result of domestic problems, with seemingly no repercussions.

Yep, as above, tell them you have domestic issues, nowt else you can do. Might be unpaid but family comes first!
