Being sent to other depots

Just a query - what is the official rule on being sent away to work in other depots? I don't mind going but I've noticed that they always ask "if thats OK?" and when you say no they don't push it. Is that becuase officially they cannot send you to another office if you don't want to go?

Nope they can send you its part of the P&M2007 agreement (the flexibility one) its in downloads.

However they have to follow certain guidelines and rules and, call me a cynic, they are probably either hoping you don't know these rules and keeping you on side, or they are actually showing you some respect.

The major rules are:

1. They pay you expenses travelling between the offices or they convey you. (bus/train fairs - mileage allowance etc)
2. You start at your office and then travel to the other.
3. Your duty times do not change without you agreeing.
4. Your duty time finishes at your own office. This means that if you can't do docket they have to allow you travelling time back to your office within your hours.

Other rules are that they can use reserves or volunteers in line with local arrangements, so they have to be fair in spreading it around. That means that unless they have volunteers, they cannot select the same small group all the time.

As we work under a "collective agreements" procedure, then it applies to everyone no matter when they started. Also if it was otherwise it would fail under the Age Discrimination laws, which can work in both directions. However, you may be in an office that has a local agreement to use reserves and volunteers and if you are neither you won't used. If you are a reserve or will become one, then use it to your advantage.

Thanks for the replies - perhaps they were just being respectful when asking (it's such a rare occurance I was sure there was some other motive). So reading those rules you are within your rights to say you don't want to use your own car to get there - they can't force that can they?

Yes you can say you don't want to use your own vehicle - However, play it canny. Don't just say you don't want to, especially if you have before, explain why (servicing, low on fuel etc etc).

But remember you'll need the correct insurance cover as well. Travelling between offices is not considered commuting by insurance companies. The one good thing is that IIRC the mileage allowance in Royal Mail is quite high its 45p per mile last I heard, but check what the current figure is before you claim.

They are now doing this at our DO due to lasping. Best thing is they have still got people in working they're day off !!!!

same here, they take people OFF a rota, send them away, and keep the official "spares" at the office. The more I see the more I wonder....
