Job Reference After Leaving RM

Hi all, newbie here.

Just a quick question. After being a postie for over 20 years, I was accused of something I didn't do (not a criminal offence) but it led to my suspension and subsequent dismissal. I have appealed and it was turned down. I now have a date for an employment tribunal.

However, in the meantime I have been looking for other work. I have applied for a particular post and they have requested a reference from Royal Mail. At this point, I have not advised them that I was dismissed, just that I left to persue a new career. They will be contactng RM HR.

Will RM HR advise them that I was dismissed or just give the dates that I worked for them? It seems massively unfair for them to tell prospective employers that I was sacked when I am not guilty. Especially as it will cause me problems in finding alternative employment. There have been no other issues in the 20+ years and I have always been a good worker.

THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT YOU EXCEPT ATTENDANCE AND SICK RECORD ECT.

Thanks for the above. The only problem I have is that the only manager left at my office is the one that accused me of the actual offence, so there's no way he will write anything decent. I am not bothered about anything else they say, except I really don't want them to say dismissed. My prospective company are only needing the dates I worked between but need it directly from RM.

You should have received a leavers pack there will be a copy of the reference in there.

In any case it will say the following;

Name
Dates employed from/to
Unit
Grade
Reason for Leaving

It will say 'Dismissed - Gross Misconduct'.

I presume then that any new reference will say the same.
Seems so unfair that because I'm not believed all future employment is predjudiced.

No, thats the only reference you will get from RM

it is correct that former employers can't give you a bad reference, they can however refuse to give you one at all, which is the same as a bad one.

incidently, my references were never taken up when I joined RM, I wonder if anyone's has been?

I'm in the same position been dismissed going to an et and I'm worried wether reference from rm will give the reason I got dismissed plus taking them to an et . Obviously future employers might think twice on y I got dismissed plus taking an employer to a tribunal especially in this climate

ive applied for loads of jobs whilst sacked.
got called for one interview and before hand on the phone i was told i needed 2 refences from previous jobs.
i put rm hr down and a union rep lol

they asked who he was and i said a collegue lol
they said i needed a manager or someone higher up.....well i was sacked so no chance and my previous company folded and never stayed in contact with anyone there.

couldnt go for the interview.

barely even got a reply off most saying i hadnt got an interview.

there is very little out there and i think i read somewhere that there is 40 people applying for every position advertised!!!!!!

The reference is in the Leavers Pack. Look again everyone misses it its just a black and white letter.

If you are asked by your prospective employer about the dismissal tell them you believe you were unfairly dismissed and that is why you're going to an Employment Tribunal to clear your name, honesty is the best policy.

royal mail will not comment on reasons for dismissal to any third party,as your case has to be heard by tribunal, if your case has been accepted by the tribunal you are in with a shout of winning your case.I woud not be looking for work at the moment because if you win case any award will be based on the hardship it has caused you.
How do i know this because after 21 yrs service I was in the same position you now find yourself in.
