feeling intimidated

Post by darkie73 »

I need advice I have worked for royal mail for about 9 months now and knew when I starsted it was a male dominated work force. So I took the sexual comments towards myself at first and thought it would die down, but infact its got worse. I won't go to the management as that's not me, I can't go to my rep as he is sometimes part of it plus he has many friends that have been for years in the office. I can take it but I'm starting to dread coming in to work. Any advice would be appreciated on how to stop/or deal with this situation

you have to say something

as long as you don't they think it its okay - or that you don't mind

any other women in the office you can talk to???

btw tsking it to management does not mean it has to become official - it may just need a word in the right ear and it stops

The usual advice is to 1) notify a manager (though I realize that you find this difficult)
2) Involve the union- you can get help from your branch rather than the rep in your office.
3) Contact RM's Bullying & Harassment helpline 0800 587 4777
4) If all else fails, try the Citizen's Advice Bureau

You'll also find some useful advice here http://www.safeworkers.co.uk/sexualharassmentwork.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But don't suffer in silence!

Good luck.

That's a joke reguarding RMs video, follow the advice others have given, there is no way you should put up with the behaviour you have been subjected to, hope it works out.

I think most women go through this kind of thing in RM. It starts out as a bit of banter until sometimes the innuendo or comments can be quite hurtful.

When I was in this kind of position. I actually spoke to the loudest one on the quiet, and told him that it had to stop as the comments were getting too much. In all fairness, it died down. I would have taken it further if I had needed to.

If you feel you can't speak to the ones doing it. Contact the bullying helpline. Although not strictly bullying (might be in your case, wasn't in mine) they may be able to point you in the right direction.

Thanks guys I joined this site for a bit of support, whilst it has taken me a long time to post I now feel better. I've decided to have a word with the person who does it the most hopefully he will listen and others will follow. Ill let you all know how it goes

I sympathise darkie73, as someone in my old office confided in me that she was finding all the constant innuendo too much, and was dreading coming in to work. NO-ONE should ever be made to feel like that. So I spoke to one of the worst offenders, told him how upset they were all making her, and asked him if he would be happy for his daughter to be subjected to those sort of comments every single working day? It did put a stop to the comments directed at her... but then the numpties started whispering rumours about how she and I must be having something going on between us

Inform the Manager in the first instance, there's nothing wrong with your principals for reporting bullying. Next tell the Union Rep you will be reporting them to the Branch if they don't stop it, their position is subject to having passed Diversity Training and maintaining those standards. If either of the above fail to meet to your satisfaction telephone the Bullying and Harassment Help Line.

I had problems once, but follow the correct route, as others said it will improve, you are not the only one,I've had to ask others to ask problem people to STOP, and I've told them it does work, BE BRAVE!! thinking of you.

You need to face up to your harassers and tell them that if it does't stop you will tell their wives or partners what they have been saying to you
