Why are our vans so crap?
Every office seems to have a yard full of dirty, clapped out, crappy old vans. Other companies seem to manage to take much better care of their vans. So where are we going wrong? Sure it is partly down to the workshops who never seem to want to fix anything unless the van is totally undriveable but it must come largely down to the drivers. How do other companies manage to get their drivers to take better care of the vehicles? Surely this can't be that difficult and would actually save RM money in the long run Just a random thought of the day really following a few discussions in the office today now that more than half our 35 vans are off the road due to defects.

I am guessing cause it's the same at my place that because of P&L they are seriously knocking the arse out of the vans we've got at the moment.

It does'nt help when the workshops are being shut down and the breakdown pickups being subbed out to independant firms.

We have got a lot of Thrifty van hire vans in our yard,i wonder if RM should buy shares in them!

I think our oldest van is an 08 
All the rest are 59 upwards to 61.

the way my p&l partner drives it, i'm not surprised how much fuel it drinks, not will be when it develops a problem…

Our newest are 58 with quite a lot of 04 and 54s. Not that the age of them should really matter that much if they are looked after and maintained properly. UPS seem to be able to run 15+ year old vans without them looking like they belong on the scrapheap.krussel wrote:I think our oldest van is an 08

The vans are crap because nobody gives a crap, manager can't afford the budget, posties have been beaten so much that they just want to finish and get home.
I don't wash my van, mainly because there's only one garage in the area with a drive through car wash and they don't take cards for it, only cash but my van is nice and legal and I drive it like I'm driving Miss Daisy, I'm in no hurry so why take it out on the van

We've had a load of new Bippa vans turn up for our revision and most of them seem to be rejects from other offices. They have electric windows that don't work, missing trim bits, the bonnet on one was twisted, several came pre-dented which will save a few in our office the trouble of making their own.

simple answer there not looked after, would u treet ur car the way u treet ur van unlikely, were not in a revision yet but have been given a numer off bippas over the last year or so, one has been smashed by a rural driver driving like an idiot, one with bout 7000 miles got a new engine from an idiot putting 2litres off oil into the engine, one the bonnet is knakered from slaming it down with the pole still up, its as simple as that, how many vans i your fleet u reckon are running with low oil level little water, warning lights on dash it all adds up, i broke down twice in one week on collection 2 different combos clutch away both times, same recovery driver both times lol

my complaint about the vans used in park and loop is that they are what they are-just vans!..and not adapted in any way for the purpose they are being used for- postal services in other countrys have installed shelves and racks in their vehicle to use the full cubic space and not the chuck it on the floor method as fostered by Royal Mail and apparently the CWU
