A posty from my office signed for a customers Special Delivery,left it in the shed and 739 stating parcel in shed.The customer has come home and the parcel is not in the shed but has been stolen.The customer as you would expect is doing there nut and insisting the posty be sacked as they had no permission to sign for special in first place.He has 10 year clean record but does he have any chance of keeping job??

I would not wish the sack on anybody, but the actions taken in this instance were suicidal, I would not do this even with a "recorded" or just leave a standard packet somewhere unless this place was on official record at the depot as a safeplace with a special instruction on the walk frame to use it.

If he does keep his job it will be because management screw up his dismissal which is always possible.

Sad thing is it probabaly was in the shed but the customer knows his stuff so is gunning for a refund or repalcement from the seller

Does his face fit? One of our lot 'lost' a Special, only for it to emerge that he had posted it through by mistake. It only came to light when the customer phoned to complain that he hadn't obtained a signature, but he's still here - mainly due, perhaps, to the fact that he's a lino's pet.

One of our guys thought he was doing a customer a favour by signing the SD card and posting the SD through the letter box with a note telling the customer he had signed for it on his behalf .Customer visited the D.O. showing the note to managament , the postie was dismissed 2 weeks later.

That and the fact that he could argue it was a genuine mistake.
Not something you can do if you've been dumb enough to fraudulently sign for an item and dump it in a shed.

There is a difference between making a mistake and deliberately ignoring procedures.
The level of honesty afterwards will also have a bearing on the outcome of any conduct code interviews. (I'm sorry I made a mistake is always better than it wasn't me, it was a big boy who ran away afterwards.)
The postie in question will be lucky to keep his/her job but a clean record will stand them in better stead.
If they sacked everyone guilty of gross stupidity there would be very few of us left in the job.

Not something you can do if you've been dumb enough to fraudulently sign for an item and dump it in a shed.

As far as I am aware he kept schtum about it going 'missing', as he genuinely thought he had lost it and had both himself and his P&L partner searching for it on the streets for about an hour.

Don't just marginise customers with that good statement, extend it to requests of a "dodgy" nature given by colleagues higher up the food chain, unless of course they give you the instruction clearly written in an unambiguous manner.

I drop on to quite a few different duties with the regular guys telling me I can leave this here and sign for this there. I always tell them I'll slip any I can't get rid of regardless, as I cover about 4500 address over all the duties I cover, and will no way remember who wants what doing where!!??

There first reaction is "But they look after me at xmas"

I say they don't look after me at xmas so bollox to em, I'll do the job properly.

Also, there is a chance of creating revenue for RM by slipping packets/recordeds, as the customer could always get it redelivered to a Post Office as a Local Collect - costing a quid. That goes towards keeping us in work.
