sorry to sound such a newb, but could someone provide an explanation of who/what they are, and for what?

from my reading of it, they sound like a semi-stasi organisation used to catch posties out for relatively minor/major infractions.

if privatisation goes ahead, they'll probably be first against the wall for not providing any added shareholder/stakeholder value…

i have been in contact with the IB a couple of times in my capacity as a rep

i found them to be totally professional in their manner and expertise

the thing i will say though

you will never get to see them except if they have you bang to rights

i was told that they will spend a thousend pounds to catch you nicking one pound and rightly so and are not interested in minor transgressions they come accross while investigating another person

Different perspective...
Someone in our D.O. miss delivered to Mr IB's house.
He came storming in and demanded a head on a plate.
Was promptly told to f off.
Another one came into the yard while one guy was loading up the rear of the vehicle and jumped into the drivers seat,spouting about how he could have nicked it....not without the keys he couldn't.
A third nearly knocked one of our pickets over during IA driving at 30mph in a 5mph zone....was duly reported and he promptly threatened to tear the place apart.
I respect what they do but professional...not in my experience.

Kiethpostie is dead right. You will never see any of these guys if you do you're in trouble. IB had a base at my old royal mail office i think it was a regional one but you never saw them not even in the canteen...

They've been in our office a few times talking to the manager etc or hauling somebody away but tend to act like posties are invisible.

QUESTION: Are there any female IB'ers? Can't imaging RM discriminating BUT of all the IB people that have been pointed out to me (about 10?) they've all been males.

i cannot understand why all the negative feeling towards the IB
if you have done nothing wrong and have followed all the correct procedures then you have nothing to worry about

they are only doing a job just like the rest of us

i will say it and keep saying

do your eight hours, take your break and go home, royal mail have totally eroded staff morale and deserve nothing more or nothing less now

if you cut corners, even for the best intentions, royal mail will give you your p45, especially if you are full time and on the old contract of employment

Some have had positive experiences with IB.
Some have had negative.
You could use the same argument for managers but you won't hear many kind words for them on here.

You'd like to think that but I've heard more than whispers that a person that was hated by a DOM had their house searched etc by IB after the manager didn't give IB the full story or was very economical with it.

Can't see that you can have a "positive" experience with IB as the only reason that they'd be interested in you or any other RM employee is if you were nicking or doing bad things. Has anyone been 'got' by IB ever been found innocent? or got there job back? Not from what I've seen.

IB have no authority to search your house/property unless you have told them its ok to do so. They have to get the police, who then have to get a warrant if you say no. The only thing they can search is your works locker.
I've never been stopped by IB whilst out on delivery so I must be doing something right

Again I've not had any 'contact' with IB but I guess if they ask to look at your house then its not a...... request!. Its easier for them if you say yes but I have no doubt that if needed they would get the required authorisation.
