I HAVE IT CONFIRMED THAT ROYAL MAIL FOOTWARE IS NOT CLASSED AS PERSONEL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
so if you have an accident on duty and the manager tries to make you culpable for not wearing royal mail shoes, speak to your rep
the only exception to this is if you are doing a duty where steel toe caps are needed, loading bay etc for example
but royal mail can still do you for failure to abide by the uniform code

Re: royal mail footware is not classed as PPE
In my office there are some who don't wish to wear RM shoes with steel toe caps so they can get out of doing some hard work for a change on the platform !!keithposty wrote:I HAVE IT CONFIRMED THAT ROYAL MAIL FOOTWARE IS NOT CLASSED AS PERSONEL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

you are entitled to two pairs of shoes a year that are issued by royal mail
if your duty dictates that you wear steel toe caps and dont, that is not following royal mail instructions on ppe and disciplinary action can be taken

There appear to be two types of footwear worn throughout Royal Mail (1) Royal Mail Standard Issue Footwear and (2) PPE Safety Footwear Range.fishtank wrote:Confirmed by who keith?keithposty wrote:I HAVE IT CONFIRMED THAT ROYAL MAIL FOOTWARE IS NOT CLASSED AS PERSONEL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
This argument has been running between Royal Mail and the CWU for years.
An extract from LTB 194/09 dated 4th March 2009 :-
To improve the level of choice and obviate the reason for staff not to wear Royal Mail issue shoes and boots, Royal Mail Letters will be introducing four additional types of occupational footwear from two manufacturers to complement the Hi-Tech Magnum shoe and boot range.
These will be:
· Dr Martens shoes and boots, manufactured by Airwair.
· CAT shoes and boots, manufactured by Caterpillar.
These footwear manufacturers have a high level of brand recognition and a solid reputation in both retail and workwear environments and will therefore hopefully offer the suitable alternative options for all Royal Mail Letters wearers. Royal Mail Letters will also be adding similar choices to the PPE Safety footwear range. Existing allocations will remain unchanged and individuals will be entitled to select one type of shoe or boot.
Before the Dr Martens and CAT ranges are introduced as general issues, both types have been sent to SATRA and the HSE's Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) to conduct tests to confirm that they meet Royal Mail's safety standards following which trials will be run at a number of operational units to ensure their suitability.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: royal mail footware is not classed as PPE
i am just putting up one of my email conversations
they are between myself and the royal mail safety advisor
Thanks for your E Mail.
I have spoken this matter over with zzzz zzzzz and have also read through the accident investigation report relating to zzzz zzzzzz.
The investigation report does highlight the fact that zzzzzz was not wearing Royal Mail footwear at the time of his accident, but let me reassure you that no blame has been apportioned to him over this.
zzzz zzzzz advises me that after checking with uniform stores it appears that zzzzzz has never been issued with Royal Mail footwear.
This matter should have been picked up at his induction and steps will be taken to ensure that this doesn’t happen again.
On the more general question of provision of personal protective equipment, let me explain the situation to you as I understand it (zzzzzz, if you know differently, please let me know).
Royal Mail footwear for delivery OPG’s is not currently classified as “Personal Protective Equipment”. Royal Mail have been in discussion with the CWU for several years over this matter and discussions continue.
Even though Royal Mail footwear is not classified as “Personal Protective Equipment”, it doesn’t mean that sub standard footwear should be worn. My view is that Royal Mail footwear should be worn by all delivery OPG’s as part of our uniform standard. The only exception is when a delivery OPG is not able to wear Royal Mail footwear for medical reasons and is able to produce a GP’s letter as evidence.
Hope this explains matters.

Re: royal mail footware is not classed as PPE
So, can we buy our own Doc Martens then?
I've asked rm for CATS but they never arrived, 18months later.
I was gona buy my own Magnums, the Winterproof ones, so contacted Magnums directly, and they said go via RM...
I wud buy my own Docs as these were the kiddies back-in-the-day.
In fact, I and 60 others had ours "borrowed" by the police whilst we all walked 12 miles home one Bank Holiday.
Can still hear the Reggae playing in me ears!

Re: royal mail footware is not classed as PPE
I would be more inclined to Email Dave Joyce at CWU H.Q. and ask specifically a. Can you confirm if Royal Mail footwear is classed as PPE in it's entirety. or b. Is royal mail footwear of a standard issue classed as PPE. c. Is specifically any safety footwear issued by royal mail classed as PPE.
