Advice for a colleague, possible dismissal.

Post by Ogg »

A good friend and colleague (sixteen years service), quiet bloke an all that found himself caught out by a security inspector. He left his van running while he dropped off the mail and returned to find said inspector sitting in his van. Anyway, he's now been threatened with the conduct code and possible dismissal. In his defence he has a good work record, conscientious etc but obviously he's worried he will now lose his job. Any advice will be welcome.

To be honest I think he's probably in the poop. Something like that is a major no no and I really don't think a spotless record will make much difference! :hmmmm

His only chance is if he's best buddies with the DOM other than that............ say goodbye!

What are the rules for leaving a van running, even if u are at the most remote farm and u pull right next to the front door do u still have to turn van off and lock it?

Yes.

RM Delivery Equipment Security Procedure
Low Risk

Park as close as reasonably possible to delivery point, whilst complying with statutory requirements.
On exiting the vehicle remove ignition key and keep on person.
On leaving your vehicle the passenger window must remain closed. Wherever practical the drivers window should be closed. It is accepted that the drivers’ window may be left partially open to allow for ventilation. Ensure that passenger and driver doors are locked - also, set alarms where fitted.
Where road and traffic conditions permit, keep to scheduled route.

Blimey I thought I was doing th job by the book, going to take me even longer to deliver now and leave even more mail!
Do u think IB would be that harsh to do you if u left it running at a farm in the middle of know where?
So what are the rules about mail in front of van, if I'm going along a road with say 5 different farms am I allowed all mail in front of the van or do I have to get it out the back of the van every time I get to the farm?

I think it would be unlikely to find IB at a farm in the middle of nowhere,i also think it would be doubtful whether they would take action as they would look at the overall risk but the single most important underlying statement driving mail security is “MAILS ARE NOT LEFT UNATTENDED OR INSECURE AT ANY TIME ”... that is the mail integrity licence obligation.
So what are the rules about mail in front of van, if I'm going along a road with say 5 different farms am I allowed all mail in front of the van or do I have to get it out the back of the van every time I get to the farm?
At all times:
Doors to load area locked shut.
Drivers should consider whether driving with all doors locked and windows closed provides greater personal protection.
Lock ALL Special Delivery items into the security box. If there is no security box, ensure Special Delivery items are carried in the rear of the vehicle, just behind the partition, if fitted.
All mail for delivery should be secured in the load area of the vehicle. Other than a working bundle (not SD items) which can be carried in the front passenger footwell. This bundle must be taken with the driver each time he/she has to leave the vehicle.
No mail should be left in the front of a vehicle when either the driver or passenger is not in the vehicle.
All SD items must always be in the rear of the vehicle

Thanks fishtank, so would you turn off van yourself at a farm?
And if I did turn it off at every farm the managers couldn't say I'm taking the piss and doing it just to be slow, cause they look at me like I'm just taking the piss all the time and why am I the only one leaving mail but it's because I'm doing it how it should be done.

I always take the keys and hit the lock button.
To be honest it's more habit than anything else now.
I don't often do rurals now but a lot of the time with farms you have to park quite far away from the actual delivery point so it makes sense to lock up.
As for management...they made the rules, they can hardly bitch about it when you follow them.

Yeah I know, it's just everybody else moan at me in office that I'm always leaving mail for the postie who's on it the next day.
As for packets do u ignore notices on doors for where to leave them? We watched a DVD what said to never leave packets anywhere only if it says on the packet where to leave it, if a customers says to u,if u have any packets leave them in my shed, do u do that or do u still 739 them?
A lot of posties in my office even sign for stuff

So did the southport postie win a appeal or not?
It just so anoys me that if u did totally everything by the book you could probley only get about half of the delivery done, so what would happen if managers say I'm slow and taking the piss, would they have to prove it,would they come out with me and test me?
