can we collect post from the doorstep?

i was asked this on the doorstep by a customer the other day. i'm fairly new to the job so i told her i didn't think so and she left it at that.

was i right, or should i have offered to take it back to the do?

You can collect it on rural duties, not in towns though - that's unless it's changed.

if its part of your duty spec then you can.
however when the IB check your bag and find a letter not for your duty?
or the letter doesnt arrive and a complaint is made that the postie took it?
would the poor old biddies make up my lost wages if I got sacked?

The official answer is no.

I know this because a customer once told me. She lives at a remote address to which I was delivering while the regular bloke was on leave. She asked whether I'd take a letter despite it not being allowed and I said "No problem, why do you say is it not allowed?" She explained that the regular guy had refused to take letters and she'd been so pissed off she'd pursued it with customer services, who'd told her he was right.

I always take letters when asked by elderly customers. Have refused two younger people who tried to give me letters in the town. When you do accept letters always check it's properly addressed, stamped and sealed. Customers do seem to find the simplest tasks challenging.

Take it we're back to the "Don't think - just do (*rse covering)" mode here ... am always happy to help out the elderly now and again ... costs nowt - and aren't we trying to get "good press" ??

I know that "discretion" seems to be a dirty word on here but ...

Asked the DOM a while back about this he said "if the person lives more than a mile from a post box your suppose to take it.
It would be nice to know the official line on this,there are a couple of instances i'd like to sort out,i'm a floater covering town and rural duties.There's a hotel and a convelesent home that give you mail,thing is both are less than a hundered feet from a post box.Also some farmer has moaned about me to the Dom about the way i went through his farm,Dom told him get a road end box,he refused cos we pick up his mail.

I do pick up mail from rural places but some people leave money to pay for stamps i just leave it,the guy that has done the round for years does it for them,others expect you to get receipts for proof of posting.

I don't mind on the rurals. All our rurals have collections attached doing the POs and boxes in their area anyway. I wouldn't take anything from firms though unless they have an official collection. We have several firms which have stopped paying for collections because the delivery postman collects their mail for free
