a revision for my d.o. is still a long way off.the office dim told us today that is looking at saving 78hrs a week for the coming financial year,part of this is to increase the daily absorption,with the absorption we are doing now are delivery span is 4 hours plus.carrying weight on the shoulder,surely there has to be a maximum delivery span dont tell me he can just keep adding delivery work to replace in door work.everybody is knackerd now doing the delivery span we do please help

In units where agreement for change is required in advance of local deployment of the transformation project/delivery methods, consideration can be given to varying the span length provided that genuine and demonstrable solutions to weight and fatigue are introduced.

So what are your manager's genuine and demonstrable solutions to weight and fatigue?
If there are none which i suspect is the case it should be 3.30hr max.

Where does 4hr 15mins come from, as I always had at least 4hr30mins on all my deliveries. The office asked if this is right as we always heard other offices did not do this amount of time on delivery, all management said as we are rural they can make us work 8 hrs outside I did point out that we are entitled to 40mins meal relief, so they could not,mostly we are out about 5to 5/1/2 hours

It sounds like now is the time for your depot OPGs to start looking at how their typical working day compares to the protocols in place for things like mail secuity; health and safety; indoor work etc. P&L revisions are not going live to make savings for your DOM, they are happening to take those weighty pouches off our shoulders and change delivery methods to account for the increasing amount of internet shopping parcels.

Start doing things by the book along the lines of...
Do not lock up the HCT, load up your pouch and do lengthy loops. You should only leave your locked HCT for 2/5/10 minutes depending upon the risk assessment, unless you are emptying the HCT of every bit of mail. Pushing the trolley around every delivery point takes time, which should be legitimately accounted for in the delivery span. The only thing that should be in the pouch are your specials, nothing more, nothing less.
Unlocking the trolley to get packets or return packets to the safety of the HCT takes up legitimate time, do not load yourself up like a donkey unless there is good cause, such as a block of flats.
If the trolley is going to go out of sight, it must be locked to an immoveable object. If you have a large block of flats (or other delivery point) that will take longer than yourt risk assessment, you must get that HCT back in view before the time limit and then return to your delivering. Very likely on days when a 25+ bloack has D2D and more than one attendence call.
Don't overload the HCT, a Mk1 must not exceed 104Kg fully laden. Excess must be bagged up at the walk bag drop, this legitimate replishment takes time.
If on a pre P&L bag/bike round, do not treat maximum pouch weights as one 16Kg and the rest 11Kg for everywhere. A block of flats with stairs should only have a lower pouch weight (5Kg?), which might mean you have to return to your bag drop sooner, again using legitimate time.
Don't filter (flick through mail bundle getting letters for the next address) while on the move. If you have this bad habit you will be shocked at how much extra time the walk will do by filtering while stationary, immediately after posting the preceeding address' mail.
Don't be tempted to lean over a wall to post mail to the next delivery point, follow the official pathway. Again, this will use additional legitimate time.
Ensure you use your paid meal relief remainder (having taken some in the depot before delivery, but ensuring you have 20 minutes to take outdoors if working 6 hours or more).
Don't doorstep packets that are attendence calls! Give each item 60 seconds, including writing the P739. Take it from someone with double the 3% agreed attendence calls, this is a time eater if done properly.

Don't get me wrong, it appears planners/management have got some P&L revisions very wrong, but the amount of time saving shortcuts we are giving to our managers pre-revision is unreal. If we all did the job vaguely properly, most depots would go into meltdown with cut-offs, because the system is set up relying on us posties to try and save time by whatever means... But job and finish is over.

My walk is officially recognised on average as over 4 hours delivery span by the computer, its even over 3hrs30mins on the model week! Guess what happens to the excess I cannot do if I deliver reasonably by the book, considering my 4hrs30mins contract, when I need:-
Time to get my specials and get them in order with my recorded
Time to tie up
Time for my meal relief (taking account of any extra by working over 5 hours)
Time for replenishment (refilling my HCT because the complete walk typically weighs over 104Kg gross)
Time for a toilet break
Time for sorting out failed packets

rurals, i heard can be longer, because they have less calls.

I had a rural duty which had 500 calls, which took me 1 hr to deliver to the farms, and then another 479 calls to do ,this is a myth rurals have less calls, and then we had to empty boxes , post offices on the way round

The deliveries in my office just seem all so different. We have some at less than 3hrs long and a few at 5 hr (rurals)

I ve have gps tracked mine and it came out at 11 miles with a total delivery time of 4hrs 30 mins. That was on a fairly light day though and today took me 4hr 45mins with a trolley /bike.
