I love mine too, he's a border collie called Badger, very clever and very loyal. I'm lying on the couch as I type this and Badge is at my feet. He's not keen on strangers and although he has never bitten anyone I always keep him under close control. I have been around dogs since as far back as I can remember. My mum used to board them for the RSPCA when they had no room in their kennels. You can imagine having a succession of strange dogs for a week or two and the number of bites.................my dad always used to say "it's a long way from your arse" which in truth it was sometimes my arse.

I remember when I was about seven and taking one beast for a walk, the hound of the baskervilles had nothing on this thing - it was a bloody giant and would chase anything that moved, out popped a little heeler and off went this crossed donkey chasing it, I tripped and fell and daren't let go of the lead or my mum would have killed me, the roadway was just ashes from peoples fire grates and I was wearing short trousers so you can imagine what my knees and legs looked like.

Grow up and grow a pair ! No offence obviously, but how badly were you bitten ..... really ? Read up on google about kids that are MAULED by dogs and yet grow up to realise that it was a one off and even have dogs themselves. Seriously.... not getting out of the van???????
It's part of life and part of the job. Before anyone starts .... yes i have been bitten by a dog but still own one, I have also had a car crash but still drive, been stung by a wasp but still go out and have picnics.

Well you aren't going to know others if you don't get out of the van - don't be afraid be confident and what if you do get bitten it isn't the end of the world.

People still shouldn't have their dogs loose in their front gardens when they know postman is coming, it is well known for dogs to take a disliking to posties over other people as we evade their personal property by posting letters through their door. Therefore we are far more likely to get bitten and after being bitten it makes you nervous and the dogs sense that. I know my dog wudnt hurt anybody but I wudnt leave him in the front garden as I know some people fear dogs.

You'd probably be better off working in another environment wally like a call centre or admin centre.

if i drive onto someones property and dogs are loose (their own territory) i wouldn't get out of the van either! if i don't know the dogs you seriously think i'm going to take the owners word they are ok? f**k that! i pip and they either call the dogs in or come to the van themselves or mail is endorsed 'dogs out' and the it goes back. nowadays you get out of the van and get bitten YOU get conduct coded for putting yourself at risk!

(some) People are always going to leave dogs out without any thought for anyone - part of life part of the job - never ever going to change - time to put up or shut up - do it or leave.

Yes but I was fine with dogs before, why should I stop doing a job because a irresponsible dog owner had his dog loose in the street and it bit me and now I have a fear.

What exactly is your fear wally, that you'll be bitten? What if you do?

I'm guessing just follow advice and not go if I see a dog is out.

That's best Wally, don't feel guilty at not delivering post if a dog is around, just endorse it and move on to the next house. Your safety comes first it's not worth putting yourself in danger, especially for the ungrateful RM.

F***ing sh*tted myself today...pushing mail through a letterbox on door and the door was open - so i simply chuck the bundle in the gap - (i didn't reclose the door since i thought it was slightly opened for a reason...left and 2 seconds later a dog started chasing me out of the house - i actually remembered being taught how to use the pouch to put in front of the dog so i don't get bitten, but since the bag was my colleagues and it's designed for bikes the straps were literally stuck on my so no movement at all--- next thing you see is my trying to act calm yet desperately running for my life - luckily a biker went past me and the dog lost attention to me I can honestly tell you that adrenaline rush was one of the highest i have ever had since i didn't realise the barking dog in the house was out to bite me

As per a previous post I owned dogs for 20 years and never had another one bite or be aggressive to me, even when breaking up fights. However, within a month of being a postie I'd been bitten twice - both times by seemingly placid, older bitches. The bites weren't bad, but I will not now go onto any property where there is an unattended dog loose. To be fair pretty much every owner on my walks recognises that and will either put the dog(s) away or come and collect the mail at the gate. I'm still not at all nervous of dogs, but won't put myself in the position of risking being bitten - for £8 an hour why should we?

It's one thing being careful with loose dogs and totally different having an unhealthy fear of them IMHO.

I'm ok with dogs its cats i hate. I have a fear of cats.
