Low income families with parents in part-time work could lose nearly £4,000 per year because of a change in tax credits, the Labour Party says.

Families can currently qualify for Working Tax Credit if one parent works at least 16 hours a week.

About 212,000 families could be hit from April when the threshold is raised to 24 hours per week, the official data highlighted by Labour shows...

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Honestly !! There is not an office in the country that has no over time. Why not work 40 + hours a week and dont claim ? I know circumstances dictate (childcare etc) but my brother in law chooses not to work extra hours in order to qualify for tax credits where as I work 6 days a week breaking my 'b#@*s' to have that SA rest day payment ! Not the tories fault, to many free loaders from days gone by :no no

Maybe it would be sensible for you to do less hours which would perhaps allow the creation of more jobs and get a few more "free loaders" off the dole.
Just an alternative viewpoint. :whistle

If I work less hours does my mortgage decrease ? Not a problem for assisted living. Your 'alternative view point' is designed to be inflammatory :hmmmm

It's not but "to many free loaders from days gone by" is.
I would imagine a great deal of members, even full-time members claim tax credits, not because they are free loaders but because they have to.
You are welcome to all the docket you can grab.

I do not 'grab any docket' but to work 6 days is the only way the job is viable ! Full timers would be unable to claim credits due to exceeding the hours. The forum always tends to descend into political bashing (only the blue type) mind. But given a CHOICE, surely you would want to improve your position by your own efforts ? Just a thought

There is no upper limit on hours worked...It's based only on earnings.
You choose to paint all those claiming tax credits as free loaders, that's a ridiculous position to take unless you know the circumstances of every single person claiming tax credits.
That isn't a political statement either party would claim as there own(in public anyway)so it's hardly Tory bashing is it?

Tax credits is money that is recirculated to low paid workers from a system that taxes these people to death. Imagine being a single parent with two kids and having to work 6 days a week?
As a society, we need to work less each and spread out the existing work between everybody so that the massive welfare bill can be lowered instead of having so many out of work. This will go towards a sustainable economic system rather than one where everyone works as much as possible which is unsustainable economically and environmentally.

Hours worked translates into earnings. You work 50 hours a week you get paid for said amount. 'Free loader' was probably ill advised wording however if you have that CHOICE to work more hours and not claim tax credits why claim ?? In that scenario the wording probably fits.

Have a good evening

Tommasse, maybe the free loaders in society are the tory backed rich business people who over the past 20 years have reduced the working mans income to such an extent that it is no longer a living wage. The tax payer is having to support their employees, while they use every legal and illegal tax dodge their is to maintain their lavish lifestyles. In order not to be biased, ably supported by new labour over the past 13 years. This country,s overdraft could be sorted in a very short period of time if there was the political will to tax those earning in excess of £150k the same percentage of income as those earning less. The tax burden for a lower paid worker is approx 19% of income whereas the tax burden for the higher earners is approx 15%. Increase their percentage to 19% and the deficit could be paid off in a matter of 2 years.

Agreed but your missing the original and only point I made. Maybe I should have posted it as a new topic, but given the CHOICE of working extra hours and refusing because you know your tax credits are going to supplement your income surely thats wrong and 'freeloading' (not a great word with hindsight) but that was my point why not CHOOSE to help your self ? Lincox and banner18 I agree with your riposte and my point has been lost
