I'm just wondering what is happening in other offices with part timers in the repick?
The last repick the Dom allocated a walk for us. (I'm doing a share job)
This time the Dom allocated a walk to us but the union rep said it was a desirable job and said we have to go in the repick as normal. (Every job is desirable to someone) Rep reckons any job can be adjusted for us, but my thinking is that there are several jobs we can't pick. Like a 5 day rotating day off cover as we cover all 6 days in the week, or a walk were the rotating day off cover has been picked.
It would be nice to know how other offices handle part timers as I would like to have something sorted before the repick starts. I was hired to do a specific walk and prefer not to end up as a reserve.(seniority isn't very high for me or my partner.)
Seems wrong that the Dom wants to help but the Rep is stopping it.

Re: Part timers and revision/repick
We are currently still in the planning stage for our revision. It will involve a full office re-pick. There are no walks designated as part time, but we will be using seniority as the basis for the re-pick, so as most of the full timers are senior they will pick first. There are however a few part time staff that are senior to some full time staff, so some will get a set duty, some will have to be reserves. It is made more complicated by the need for drivers due to the park and loop element of the revision.
When you say that you were hired to do a specific walk, is that written in our contract? Or is it that, that is the duty you were allocated when you started? If it is the latter, then I'm afraid your contract is only for a set number of hours, not a particular walk and as such you may end up as a reserve, especially as you have little seniority.

Sounds like the rep is looking out for the best interest of the office working on seniority, and the DOM is looking out for his favourites out. Good on the rep

Re: Part timers and revision/repick
Im a little confused by your question. Do you work 6 days a week as that what it seems you are saying? Why would some work 5 days and you 6? Surely as a part-timer the only difference is that you start later so dont do much sorting, then do a delivery. No reason whatsoever that a specific job is needed for a part timer rather than a full timer. You can be a part timer cover person or have your own walk, just depends whats around when you get to pick.

I take it it's a job share.celerycelery wrote:Im a little confused by your question. Do you work 6 days a week as that what it seems you are saying?
One does Mon-Wed...another does Thur-Sat...on the same duty.
It's a very difficult system to work unless they are either kept on the same duty or just become reserves.
If they have any kind of seniority is it fair that their work pattern alone makes them a reserve?'
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Thank you fishtank. You clarify my question.
It is as you say a job share. One of us has enough seniority to be able to pick a job but not enough as all the firms/rural and other jobs where you don't partner up, will be gone by the time it comes round for us to pick. (Our office has been operating with shared vans for a long time now and people who can pick a job where they are on their own will do so) 4 Day a week jobs are not suitable to us and jobs with a rotating day off cover don't work for us either.

No favourites here. DOM is just trying to do his best. With regards to seniority it is no problem to await our turn to pick but I can foresee there not being any jobs left which we can pick and that isn't fair either.Thehair wrote:Sounds like the rep is looking out for the best interest of the office working on seniority, and the DOM is looking out for his favourites out. Re: Part timers and revision/repick
All our duties (if u can call them that) have been brought in still to have the resign bit though.
P/Ts cover 3 days a week ( the days vary from week to week) on full time hours covering roughly 3 duties.
Didn't really get a choice it was that or a so called 9 day fortnight which meant working 3 weeks at 6 days with the 4th week off.
However when trying to work out the weekly hours which should be 23hrs sometimes we're over the 23 & sometimes we're just under
Our Dim is the sort if u don't like it go.
