LTBNo:75/12 Royal Mail Letters Pay 2012

Post by Geezer »

Letter to Branches

No: 75/12 Ref: 60000 8th February 2012

TO: ALL BRANCHES WITH POSTAL MEMBERS

Dear Colleague

Royal Mail Letters Pay 2012

In recent weeks we have received a number of enquiries relating to 2012 pay.

Following an exchange of correspondence Royal Mail has confirmed that they will be paying the 3.5% pay rise due on the 1st April 2012 and also that it is not their intention to seek to use any re-opener clause to reduce this.

The Postal Executive continues to discuss this issue in conjunction with other talks that are taking place with the company. Over the next couple of days further LTB’s will be issued to provide an update on a range of Business Transformation issues.

Any enquiries on the above should be addressed to the DGS (P) Department.

Yours sincerely

Dave Ward
Deputy General Secretary (P)

Forgive my ignorance, I must have wrongly assumed the re-opener clause could be used by both the CWU or Royal Mail, depending on whether inflation was below or above the figure of 3.5%.

Instead, the CWU have now allowed Royal Mail to interpret the wording of the 2010 Business Transformation Agreement as meaning 'you'll get a maximum of 3.5%, and if inflation is lower than that amount, you may get less'.

So our skilled negotiators have, yet again, agreed to another below-inflation pay 'increase' :d'oh!

Dave Ward gave the game away in his 'looking forward to 2012' broadcast..in it he says 'there is no way the CWU will accept less than 3.5%'...so guess what's the likely outcome

Soft soap for the masses - look how hard we are, we aren't taking less, probably already knowing that the 3.5% was on the cards - paper tigers. Guess what though there'll be those who'll say that it is a master stroke and the likes of us are always complaining. Take the last three years rises and we've had a whole lot less than the rate of inflation. Then you'll get the rejoinder - yeah but look at 15 years ago....................

I don't think 3.5% in itself is terrible given the circumstances although it's hardly worth a song and dance given that it's part of a 3 year 6.9% rise however it's not this that worries me.
It's the continual and not very subtle attempt to con the membership at every turn.

First of all the re-opener clause was a stroke of genius by the negotiators to "inflation proof" our pay rise now it is a piece of negotiation hardball on the part of the negotiators that has stopped Royal Mail using it to reduce the pay rise.

The membership are not mugs, they will and judging by the comments on this thread already have seen through this in an instant.
It would seem that HQ have learned nothing from the embarrassing road shows of BT2010 that only served to drive a wedge between some "full-release" reps and unit reps and between many ordinary members and HQ.
A little honesty and humility would have gone a long way to repair that damage.
It's not great but it's the best we could get under the circumstances...would have been a better approach than falling into the trap of trying to boast about the re-opener clause.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

But if the 'carrot' of maybe getting more than 3.5% encouraged ANY people who might have voted No to the 3-year deal to actually vote Yes, then the CWU are no more than a rubber-stamp for the kind of bullsh!t we're used to being served up by Royal Mail. That's what annoys me the most

Well...considering most of the membership went to war with RM in 2009 at least believing that they were fighting against imposed unrealistic, unachievable workloads and a great deal of them seem to have ended up with exactly that....i think your point is a valid one.
We seem to have tools for this and guidelines for that but at the end of the day the only thing that matters is what comes out the other end and at the moment the only words i'm hearing are massive, ridiculous, knackered and IHR.
