318`s ! How Important Are They ??

20 of us have recently started on the CSS machines. We were pooled from different offices, based on seniority .... but we`re still waiting forour 318s. We`re doing 4, 10 hour shifts. We get two 10 minute breaks and a 30 minute break during the night shift.
Ive repeatedly asked the union rep to sort the 318s out, so we know exactly what our duties entail, but they suggest we be careful what we wish for. Because we`ve finished our shifts early sometimes (between 30-60 mins) they say RM will insist we do other work. This is nonsense, cos by the time we`re going home (if it is a little early) all the mail has been sorted and posties are ready to go out on delivery.
This appears to us (the operators) as tho the Unon reps are envious we sometimes SOMETIMES finish early. So they`re dragging their feet, sorting the 318s out.
But surely the 318 is our contract of employment, and as it stands, without them, we are vulnerable to any whim of RM management.???? Its been noted that our duties at our old offices have also been replaced already.....by part-timers obviously !

if you want your 318s your better off asking your managers not your union rep, the trouble is some people think union reps are basically managers and can get you anything you want, you have every right to have your 318 of your duty but its your managers job to supply it for you not your reps.

Couldnt get our 318s either probably because they cant be bothered to get someone to type them out and they believe this flexibility thing overides everything else. Only ones available are years out of date. This "theyve got to work the hours their paid for" like a robot, is the latest management fashionable thing to say and should disappeer eventually, as its been taken away from its original meaning. Your breaks are shorter than ours which you should challenge with union. In our mail centre we get 20 mins plus 40 mins. The end of job and finish where we had to work harder and was an advantage to managers has been replaced by parkinsons law where you make the work fit the time available in which to do it. Being moved onto another job after youve finished your sequencing to help someone whos been going slower, should soon slow down anyone who still thinks their going to be allowed to go home. Doing absolutely everything according to health and safety rules is useful for stretching things out.

Don't know if its the same all over but at our office we have not had 318s for years. We now have Walk or Duty Logs which are a lot more vague as they do not have timings on it just what you are expected to do.

BTW your reps may be dragging their feet but they are correct in saying that 318/Duty Log will now say "Works as directed" so they may be doing you a favour even though you might think not.

Your IR reps are spot on when they tell you not to force the issue of your 318. Tying your manager down to an agreed 318 will provoke them into implementing flexibility (which you really don't want). Your reps though could look at getting an extra 10mins on your meal relief. Another 20 F/time duties going to the wall replaced by P/time, 75% P/time - 25% F/time in less than 5 years at this rate!.

Don't forget, on all P318's and job Descriptions’ it should say "or as directed". so in effect management can get you to do any work that needs doing before the end of your shift.

But management can pretty much insist we do `other` things as directed, even now....without a 318.
My gripe is theres no clear definition of our meal allocations or breaks.
Whilst i appreciate its the managers job, not the union reps, to sort the 318s out, its certainly the union reps job to negotiate on our behalf, about what goes into the 318.
It doesnt bother me, or the others, to be made to stay till the shift is over, but the pettiness from others when we do sometimes finish early is gettin tiresome.

And is there a national agreement on break times for a 10 hour night shift ???

If p318 is that important to you, do like I did and make out your own, then present to you line manager.

When I asked our DOM he said P318s do not exist anymore, rep said the same. They were a bit pointless anyway because they always had a bit at the bottom saying or other tasks as directed by your manager or words to that effect.

When my office had it's last revision (P&M) our duties were put onto a blanket 318. I've personally done it.
Copies would then of gone into our walk logs.

Doing a revision,it is near enough impossible not to have a 318.
Yes in part they are worthless,but they are out there.
