Bippa Gear Boxes frozen solid.

gearboxes on the Bippas frozen solid.

Had to run the engine over half hour before it freed up.

Anyone else having this problem?

We had minus 7 but our Bippa's were ok

Gears on my bike were frozen up though, stuck in 1st all day.

im no mechanic but ive never heard of a gearbox being frozen solid

Its a common problem that appeared here last winter - the gear lever linkage freezes up. Nothing you can do about it. .

I've never had it happen on any other vehicle...

Surely Bippas are designed for European conditions, -8 is hardly extreme for Europe, and a fair regular UK winter temperature.

Not being mechanically minded could it be down to cost saving, such as buying cheaper oil etc, one that has a lower viscosity and therefore more prone to freezing.

The wife and I both use Transit Connect's ,her gear linkage freezes mine does not.

Last year we had a lot of trouble with the handbrake freezing on one full size Transit but not the other.

No matter how cold it was over here last year we had no problems, none of the vans broke down because of the cold. Don't know if it was just my office or a NI thing though

Yes there is, we had this happen last year, and again this year, so we took a look at it under H&S, we also have a helpful DOM, who also got involved. Within a day this is a quote from an email we received -

'During 2010/11 severe winter weather we did encounter some problems with the gear change cables freezing, this was due to a faulty seal on the cable, F&MS Technical team highlighted this issue to Peugeot, the outcome was Peugeot manufactured a modified cable to resolve this problem.

A Technical Service Bulletin (038/10) was issued to our service centres requesting they replace the gear change cables on any vehicle experiencing stiff/difficult gear selection, I again sent a communication to the service centres in November 2011 requesting they check the vehicles and replace cables if required prior to winter.'


So get your rep and H&S rep involved, have them check the your vans have had this recall and any work that was needed has been carried out.
