Is a postie who is employed solely on a Saturday basis eligible for the one Saturday in four off option ? If so is the postie who covers the Monday to Friday on the same walk required to swap a week day to cover this day off ? Is the 5 day a week postie within their rights to choose not to work on the Saturday ?

No they are not entitled to 1 in 4.
They are employed specifically on a saturday only contract.

Sadly this is a serious question. I have a Saturday only postie telling me that the line manager has told them that this is their entitlement, haven't spoke to the line manager myself yet but it did seem a little ridiculous, thought that it was best to establish the facts. I have always done shift swaps on a goodwill basis and was recently asked if I could do four over the summer and made to feel that I was being done the favour because said postie could have one day a month if they so chose.Which begs the question as to why they are not doing so already. I am not one to question people's honesty but I did have my suspicions as to whether this person has even spoken to the line manager. Thanks for your input.

I would ask your line manager or your union rep, to me it sounds like the guy is taking the unrine out of you. Is he friendly with the line manager? do you think it's something they have worked out between the 2 of them? I can imagine working every saturday could be frustrating if you want to go on holiday but he only works 1 day a week :-s say to him how about you work all his saturdays for 5 weeks then the following week he does your mon-fri shifts :-)

I wouldn't have thought they had a cat in Hells chance of having 1 in 4 Saturdays off if the job they're doing was advertised and recruited on the basis of being a Saturday only job - as has already been said.
