My contract runs out the first week in Feb. When should I hear something as to whether it's going to be renewed or not?
I hope it is, but at our place we have too many staff and I'm down as "spare" on the rota every day. Some days if there's nothing for me to do after prepping I have to take an hour from various rounds to make my time up. There are 3 of us in this situation but mine is the first conract to come up for renewal - do you think there is a chance it wont be renewed?
If there is a problem with lack of work, ask for transfer to nearby office if possible to prevent them not renewing. Don't worry too much about it as there will be someone who will retire, leave for new job or get pregnant. Just don't spend your wages too much just in case.
Thanks Darren, might ask the manager tomorrow just to see if he knows anything yet. Problem with the nearby office is that they have 3 people too many and were asking if we could take them the other day too! Plus they're due for a merge soon and a lot of redundancies are expected, so it would be better if I could stay where I am. Just a bit worrying especialy when you see how many unemployed there are out there at the moment
You may not be aware of a problem with Temporary Short term contract staff that RM had recently. Because they didn't follow procedure and correctly re-issue contracts when they expired they ended up (in our office at least) with an avalanche of grievances and a tonne of paperwork when they tried to give us all notice. In the end, the law was on our side those with more than 2 years service ended up keeping our jobs. If I were you I would go and ask because I don't think they'll want to get caught on this one again. We've got vacancies and the DOM has already suggested that temps that came in at christmas won't be kept on. Also, check and make sure that there isn't someone senior to you waiting for a job too......
DOM was useless today and said "they must have missed my name off the list" when I asked. Wasn't 1 bit concerned though. Who is best to ring about this - HR?

I've just called HR and the lady there said my contract was now extended to August 2012, but it could take up to 3 weeks to get a letter with the new details and so on. Spent all my round rushing and worrying that I wasn't going to be renewed then after a quick phone call it was all OK. Quite why he couldn't have done that I don't know.
You won't be alright for long term!! No one can say that to you the way things are. RM have to formally renew EVERY contract extension, every time!! You are not permanent till you have been there for 4 years. As for your DOM being useless................that ain't news
