Does this job make you grumpy ?

Does this job make you grumpy

I am being serious here does the company we work for pull people down.

I think the lack of variety of the job can be a problem and when coupled with the lack of any career advancement can cause lethargy. I also know the growing physical demands also cause feelings of fatigue especially nearer the end of the week. But is that the same in any job ?

I look around my office and I see a lot of down faces and to be honest iam not loving the job like I used to.

What you recon :hmmmm

I don't think the job does, I think the way you're treated does. When I first started with RM there was a lot of office banter etc because people had time for it. I saw the office change over the years, people getting snappy with one another because they felt under pressure and stressed because of new hours and feeling like they were being asked to work for nothing (when in fact they were just being asked to work the hours they were being paid for, something I didn't have a problem with). The banter got quite bitchy and was pretty much the main reason I decided to take IHR instead of pushing for RM to find me other indoor work. I didn't want to put up with the snide remarks I knew I would be getting because I "look OK" despite being in pretty much constant pain.

So, it never used to be the job that made you grumpy, and if you treat the job for what it is, it shouldn't. But if you let the politics and other people's agendas get to you, then it will certainly make you miserable.

Recently started in last 12 months. The workplace doesn't bring me down at all. I get really pissed off but not long term down. I put it down to a couple of things.

One, my last place of employment was a real s**t job working with complete mindless freaks and no hope of improvement, it descended in fact. It was so bad for so long I had physical signs of stress, pre-age grey hair, skin issues, etc. I was proper grumpy then - for years. So with that experience nothing much can touch me at RM.

Two, I don't take it seriously. It's the first job where I can say this, and I joined up thinking I would be as serious about it as all past employment. I will/do walk back across the walk to get an NHS appointment to an address if missorted, I do go out of my way to make sure cards are there on the day, I like to think i do a good job by the customers. But what they ask me to do in the office, and the whole atmosphere of no training what so ever has put an unexpected approach in my mind. Picture luna lovegood the spacey one from harry potter. It just doesn't connect with me somehow. That said I'm more than aware that those with folk to support outside of work have a very bad time of it. For myself if i'm sacked - it's lifes rich tapestry and I'll still be alive. I couldn't do the job with people to support - it's way to shaky for me to feel comfortable in RM employment.

However, I'm noticing more and more how the walk is building up in my mind so I don't want to do it, but it's always much less doing it than thinking about it. It is a long walk.

The drop points on my walk are good, and the people make it fine.

Hope that gives you an insight that's helpful in some way.

I've had jobs that paid less. I've had jobs that demanded longer hours and I've had jobs that were more physically demanding.

.... Until I started with RM, I've never had a job where I have seriously considered throwing myself down the stairs just so I don't have to go in!

it all started manybe about 3 years ago and when dsa started, then serious cuts came, walks became too big, people just got pissed off, less people on ips, the increase in packets, more casuals and partimers.

yes but i think its more to do with the way we are treated by mangers and postman like. we are put under to much pressure now to do lapsing and do your own duty as well.but then on the other hand i now know that i wont work past my time any more so i don't come in early i don't work my break and if i laps then i leave stuff on my own duty makes you wonder what managers are thinking go do your lapsing and leave you own duty madness.

I think it's the constant uncertainty about the future that's more likely to make anyone grumpy rather than the present job itself. There always seems to be the feeling that top management(and i use that term in the loosest possible sense) think we're all lazy sods that do feck all all day. Any changes always seem to be to the detriment of our future working conditions and the union seems to be incredibly out of touch with the job that postman actually do!

Yeah this is what iam getting :hmmmm

Thing is that I actually don’t feel grumpy or resentful of RM but ive been told that my general outlook and optimism is falling.

Everyone seems to be moaning at work with the longer delivers taking its toll in the colder weather. I miss the banter when the day was split in two with the second delivery.

I was thinking about it today and you know I could not think of a time where something POSITIVE happened at work. All of our work time learning sessions just get turned into a moan by the management banging on about poor performance and things we are doing wrong. No one gets promoted or gets any real recognition as in something they can take home.

Other than that I still like the job and the moneys good for what we do.
