On Thursday 24 November 2011, the Greek police arrested Nikos Photopoulos, President of the power workers' union GENOP/DEI, along with more than a dozen of his fellow trade unionists. They will appear in court on Tuesday 10 January 2012 to face charges that could see them jailed for up to five years. They were protesting against part of the Greek austerity measures - the cutting off of power to people unable or unwilling to pay a new, swingeing property tax, levied regardless of income or wealth. Greek trade union confederation GSEE, is calling for the charges to be dropped.

If all the Greeks paid their due taxes, no bribery and corruption, financial prudence, they wouldn't be in this mess in the first place.

I do support the Trade Unionist arresting them will not improve the situation, at the same time they need to look at the bigger picture changing Greek society where currently tax evasion is seen as a national pastime, everything is paid in cash no questions asked along with a sense of entitlement, all that has to change id the Greek were to climb out of the recession and leaving the Euro is the only solution.

Its a Mad Mad world - people who are unemployed and seeking work are given barely enough to live on, pilloried in the press, and mistreated by unethical companies whose only concern is to improve only the profit margins, instead of dealing with their moral responsibilities. Yet on the other hand, convicted criminals are glorified as stalwarts of the business/political world and given honours, bankers that caused a financial crisis are given handouts in the billions that we will be paying for decades to come, and business leaders of public companies are given bonuses for targets that are not published, and in the worst cases the business is running at a loss, or laying off workers.

Its an upside down and very cruel world we live in, and what's worse the mainstream politicians can't see it - still that's what you get with Tory and Torylite rule since 1979.

Today I saw a job advert for a 37 hour week working as an apprentice receptionist and another for a warehouse operative, both are offering £95 a week, that would be less than on benefits ! hat is appalling talk about kicking the unemployed while they are down, it is NOT a living wage, how do they get away with that ?

A workmate told me 'apprenticeships are not covered by the Minimum Wage legislation'. Dunno if he's correct in what he says, but FFS, what is the point of having a Minimum Wage if unless everyone is covered ?

If the intention was to take people out of the clutches of exploitation-level pay rates, why are they in effect allowing certain people to still be financially exploited ?

So that's why the wage was so low, it works out at £2.56p per hour, the loophole needs closing, if everybody was paid peanuts, they will spend less killing economic recovery as nobody will make big purchases or long term financial committment if they don't think they are going to be in a secure job and is low paid, quite frankly you would be better off on the dole.
