Awards versus Bonus
The Mirror today published an article in which it states that Civil servants have shared 38+ million in "extra" payments whilst Soldiers pay has been frozen. When questioned about the payments, some as much as £64k, a spokeman stated, "they are not a bonus but awards for good performance", now it may just be me but I fail to see the difference. Really how do you measure a civil servants performance, type ten words a second, write a full line without a spelling mistake
it must be pretty difficult to quantify an amount against a performance that doesn't produce anything and yet it can accrue a payment of £64 thousand.

Re: Awards versus Bonus
What always amazes me with the bonus or award culture is that there is never a flip side.
Bankers and Directors will tell you they deserve their bonuses for taking risks and making huge profits and if they don't make a profit they don't get a bonus.....that's fine but where is the risk in that?
The kind of base salary and perks they are on is not going to leave them short anyway.
I can go to a casino and win big or worst case lose the lot.
If a banker or even senior Royal Mail Director goes to their version of a casino they can win big or worst case they can walk away even.
I think if people want to play the bonus game they should be made to put the whole lot on the line.
Make their entire pay structure performance related....see if they're quite so willing to put it all on red.
You might see a more measured approach to building a company if you knew your wages completely depended on it rather than the boom/bust approach we seem to get with the present system.

Re: Awards versus Bonus
So posties don't get extra payments ie Xmas bonus, bonus for ecepting pay deals/new working arrangements.
If it's good for you why should it not be good for them.
Most civil servants are working class just like you and me.

I think the thread is re. the unfairness of the system not saying civil servants don't deserve a bonus..... What office do you manage then

Re: Awards versus Bonus
Well the £100 we get - pro rata, can be quantified by the amount of increased work we do over xmas, how do you quantify the work produced by a civil servant? The civil service produces nothing, is bloated, survives by self justification and on the strength of the money provided by the tax payer and then has the gall to say that it is an award for performance. No doubt some enterprising civil servant would be able to produce charts, statistics and a 5000 word dissertation on how the work they do is award worthy whilst troops on the front line don't deserve an increase in pay.

Re: Awards versus Bonus
Its just another world in which they live compared to ours. They get £1000’s in bonuses which they then differ to their pensions to avoid paying tax and we get £100 for doing a 6 weeks work in just 2 and phantom shares that pay us nothing.
A few years back I once walked around my delivery in the pouring rain and listened to a old interview (he was dead by then) with Adam Faith on Radio 4. Once they had covered his singing and acting years they began talking about his trading success on the stock market as he was very wealthy. The point I remember was how he explained the difference of being RICH as apposed to just well off.
His summary was this:
He said it was easy to imagine being well off as all you had do was move the decimal point to the left by one digit. For example our weekly shopping bill normally comes out around £100 so if I was well off it would actually cost me just £10.
. He went on to say that to imagine being rich just move it to the left again and super rich so on and so on.
This has always stuck in my mind and explains how celebrities can blow £300 on a bottle of wine. It also explains how we can never truly understand bonuses of £64k when we are trudging around the streets delivering crap for £8 an hour.

Those Boys are worth their weight in gold in my opinion, never mind a wage rise the very best personal safety equipment would be a start, whilst the fat greedy civil servants and MP's sit in their lush green chairs claiming money which should go to protecting those lads and lassies in fraudulent expencess and unjustifiable, unwaranted bonuses

Like I said, only a humble OPG.
Do not work O/T will not do O/T and they will not force me to do O/T, and they know better than to ask me to do O/T because they know what the asnwer will be.
Come in to time and go home to time.
Stopped doing O/T over 10 years ago once mortgage paid off.
Only worked O/T in the past as a means to an end.

The statement wasn't about O/T.Blade Runner wrote:Like I said, only a humble OPG.

How many allowances are you in receipt of to come up with the magic figure of £10.86 an hour?
Without allowances that would be a basic of £435 which isn't "humble OPG" money Blade Runner.
Like i said when you're making your usual statements try to remember that not everyone is making the same kind of money as you...or has their mortgage paid off...or took their pension early.
You might be comfortable...a lot of these guys are struggling.
