Unpaid Leave?

Just wondering whether you are able to have time off without pay as a last resort. If you are desperate for a particular day off, it's not available as holiday and no one will swap - can you have it unpaid?

Anyone know how easy this would be?
In my case I would like to have a couple of months off to gain a teaching english as a foreign language certificate and do a bit of voluntary work abroad.

I've got unpaid leave for 2 weeks coming up, but this is because i've got no more holidays left . My sitution is different.

Did you just say you want 2 weeks off and you'll have it unpaid and it was accepted?

You can take a career break, you are on unpaid leave but you're lenght of service goes on hold. For example if you've got 7 yrs 10 months and you took 2 months career break when you came back to work you will have the same 7 yrs 10 months service not 8 yrs.

Leave is leave...paid or unpaid.You fill in the form they decide whether it comes under A(paid) or C(unpaid) unless it's for one of the mandatory special circumstances like dependant's leave in which case it's automatically C,Otherwise it's at the manager's discretion so if you've been refused special leave(paid) without being given the option of taking it unpaid you're unlikely to get it.
It's unusual to get refused special leave C but it does happen and your previous special leave "record" will be taken into account.

if you book your leave then take it,as for carrying over 4 weeks over of leave that is down to your own staff.

Fill in leave sheets to get the first 3 weeks (summer leave) then all the spaces are filled, unfortunately I'm in NI and not London. Union have tried, we have tried but nothing..............good job I'm not bitter about it

That's a great idea, I'll go in tomorrow and TELL my DOM that I'm taking a week off............and then I'll enjoy the rest of the time off because I'd be sacked......................but I really love your thinking, oh wait, you're not thinking...........

dont worry we have other problems with our union, but on your leave the spread sheet must have
the weeks open for the amount of staff in your office depending how long your staff have worked in royal mail
it may be an idea then if there is holidays owing to you ask management to pay you for the time owing to you.
you may well find spaces open up on your leave sheets in future.

Pay Abated Special Leave C is your best bet, childcare issues are usually the best form of ammunition, the leave is unpaid. Good Luck.

I just had a great idea RM could use-Slash staff at all delivery offices then tell staff no leave allowed due to staff shortages!!
