First Aid Provision At Delivery offices
just to put the cat amoung the pigeons, are you aware royal mail are breaking their own risk assessment and possibly the law in regard to first aiders on site for most delivery sectors?
their risk assessment states that a minimum of 1 first aider is required on site, this is the same as the h+s minimum, however they are cutting corners, every site has only 1 first aider, for sites between 5-50 there should be one and for every extra 50 an extra on top, BUT the issue is that this first aider has a day off each week and 5 weeks annual leave a year as well so at these times there is no first aider on site, there needs to be a minimum of 3 first aiders to cover all shifts, so first aider A is on day Off First aider B on annual Leave and First aider C in the office, might be worth highlighting this with your local branch as RM have been cutting too many corners recently with regard to H+S
they should have the minimum number required on all shifts not just when some are at work
http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg214.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
we are classed as a higher hazard due to moving yorks, vehicles in yard, heavy lifting etc

Re: First Aid Provision At Delivery offices
Don't get me started on this... I've said it before, but I had a DSM tell me that he wouldn't authorise my refresher course because he "was being tight with the budget"
We were told that we shouldn't have plasters in the first aid kit, and then RM guidelines on their own intranet stated what we should/shouldn't have in there.

Plenty of first aiders in my office...............doubt any of us will get the refresher courses though but then we all head out the door which can leave the office without anyone.

Re: First Aid Provision At Delivery offices
depending on how many left in the office none are probably needed, if occupancy less than 5 no first aider is technically required, must have at least an appointed person to deal with incidents and that would be the dom or his deputy (although i have issues with this as well)DGP1 wrote:Plenty of first aiders in my office...............doubt any of us will get the refresher courses though but then we all head out the door which can leave the office without anyone.

To be honest, and im not defending rm, but theres not one person in the do who wants the job, the last bloke resigned the position and said it wasnt worth the aggravation. So where do rm go from here,do they transfer a postie out and bring in a trained first aider from another office. anyone got any other suggestions, and before anyone suggests me training for it i hate the site of blood especially my ownzx135 wrote:well i would inform the HSE, would just skip the are hs rep and notify the hse directlyunionjack0 wrote:Work in a delivery office of over fifty staff not one first aider amongst us,Area manager well aware of this fact bit still nothing is done.

I guess if they are required to have one on site and no postie wants to do it then the managers would have to be the first aiders. It probably makes more sense to have managers trained anyway as they are on site more than delivery posties.unionjack0 wrote:To be honest, and im not defending rm, but theres not one person in the do who wants the job, the last bloke resigned the position and said it wasnt worth the aggravation. So where do rm go from here,do they transfer a postie out and bring in a trained first aider from another office. anyone got any other suggestions, and before anyone suggests me training for it i hate the site of blood especially my own

yes there a bit of logic to doing that but i have an issue with that also, say in the event of a serious incident like a fire at the do, then the DOM has an immediate conflict of interest as he cant do both the jobs he is responisble for, ensuring the office is evacuated and dealing with a casualty, i dont believe doms should be the first aider either
as for seeing royal mails position on it, they are amounsgt the minority of employers who do not renumerate their first aiders, also just because no one wants to do it doesnt absolve them of their requirement to implement health and saftey legislation start ignoring it here because its inconvenient and where does it stop?

We have fire marshalls to check the building while the manager is outside checking names against the signing on sheet. While the manager(s) shouldn't be the only first aiders it would seem a good idea for them to all be trained.

Re: First Aid Provision At Delivery offices
its a different thing from lots of people being trained to lets just train the dom to be PIC, Fire Marshall and First Aider cause it costs less, thats what royal mail are doing and its going to have the potetial for a serious incident where lifes will be put at risk due to this, which is my main concernPhilthyPhil wrote:We have fire marshalls to check the building while the manager is outside checking names against the signing on sheet. Re: First Aid Provision At Delivery offices
1 out of 120 employees
none whenever they are off
Management and union fully aware but nothing done!!!!!!!!
deserves another
4 stopped doing the job due to no refresher training and when there was one they had to pay their own expenses and were encouraged to go on their day off
Great union this lot, basic H&S
but they'll insure your car or give you a credit card

Re: First Aid Provision At Delivery offices
I think the fact that there's no financial incentive for it either doesn't help. Extra work/hassle/responsibility for no extra pay/supplement= no willing volunteers.zx135 wrote:its a different thing from lots of people being trained to lets just train the dom to be PIC, Fire Marshall and First Aider cause it costs less, thats what royal mail are doing and its going to have the potetial for a serious incident where lifes will be put at risk due to this, which is my main concernPhilthyPhil wrote:We have fire marshalls to check the building while the manager is outside checking names against the signing on sheet. Re: First Aid Provision At Delivery offices
Our first aider is in an office 8 miles away, a bloke can bleed to death in the time it takes him to get to us, we also have no H & S rep on site, as we are a "Small office" whenever we complain about anything it gets forgotten, until the next time we say something about it.
